I like this farmer’s market because it focuses on local produce and goods, rather than having a ton of prepared foods.
I dislike this farmer’s market because it opens so late! 11am to 3pm. Also, I agree that many vendors are way overpriced but part of the whole reason to go is to support local farmers and have access to produce that wasn’t picked weeks before ripeness and sat on a truck for an insane, often international commute (thus decreasing our carbon emissions and increasing flavor/quality most of the time).
There are a few spots that I visit regularly: the Asian family farm in the back corner has good prices (on produce but especially on bouquets which I only rarely have the spare budget to buy; plus their produce tastes really good — their cabbage was so sweet I could eat it raw in a salad), the GF bakery in the back corner (kinda $$ but not every time), the kombucha stand (Latinx/Filipinx/LGBTQ owned; they have a growler exchange program where you bring in an empty growler for a discount), and occasionally other stands if I like the produce that is in season for specialty apples, stone fruit, or “unusual” produce. My Latina friend likes the Latino cheese vendor too.
That aside, I think it is pretty solid. I don’t really care for going to a farmers market that focuses on hot/prepared food and I do skip the $10 eggs. I also have been in the neighborhood for years and can say with certainty that the market is already much larger than it was a few years ago, when it was on the sidewalk of Broadway. I think that having solid vendors is more important than having a ton if stands. To...

Read moreHaving finished eating nearby I decided I wanted some tomatoes, not thinking about what time it was. This particular vendor had been set up at least an hour because they were there before I started eating. At what ended up being 10:25, I went there picking up tomatoes and bagging a large variety while not one, but three, bored looking people sat there watching. Not a word said until I walked up to pay and they took their headphones off long enough to say “oh we don’t open until 11:00 - I can weigh them now but you’ll have to come back at 11 to pay.” I put all of those tomatoes back and left. I understand rules but a) this is a farmers’ market and not a German grocery store b) if you see me looking like I’m trying to buy something and you can’t sell it to me for 30 minutes, just at...
