I’ve had Brian at Smithology Custom Jewelry make two rings for me since 2020. Both rings had issues with them. He never showed me any CAD drawings/wax models/3D printings for any of the rings before actually making them. Communication was pretty much nonexistent unless I would query him first. Attention to detail was lacking.
The first ring was the wrong size by one whole ring size, the design wasn’t exactly done as requested, a prong tip wasn’t flush with the center stone, a diamond fell out after it was resized to the proper size and the rose gold alloy developed dark spots on it. Brian did promptly fix all of the issues though.
The second ring had issues as well. It was to be a platinum diamond engagement ring. I specifically requested the center diamond to be set low. Pictures of the setting I wanted were provided and Brian said it would be an easy ring to make. I asked him to source some diamonds to look at and after two weeks, he got two for me to preview. Both of them were mediocre and priced higher than equivalent diamonds I was finding online. He would find fault with every single diamond I showed him online in an effort to push his stones. I ultimately purchased my own diamond but he continued to try and find fault with that one as well even though it was superior to the diamonds he had on hand.
He finally completed the ring over one month after our initial meeting and it was not done to my specifications. The shank was fine but the diamond was set very high. Also, every prong tip was not flush with the crown of the diamond. One prong was not even flush with the crown or pavilion. He used a stock, off the shelf head for the center stone. Then he said that he could cast a head and set the stone lower but I would have to sign a waiver saying I wouldn’t hold him liable if the head failed causing the diamond to fall out.
I expressed my dissatisfaction to Brian and he offered to fix the ring or take it back for a full refund. In the end, I decided to pay more money to another jeweler to fix the ring to my...
Read moreBrian is fantastic!! So extremely knowledgable and professional. We had no idea what to expect when we decided to do a custom engagment ring and wedding bands. We went into the process without a lot of insight into what we liked. Brian guided us with the pros and cons of different cuts and metals and showed us examples of diamonds so we understood size and clarity grades. I wish I could put into words how special the entire experience was for us. He even fast-tracked my engagement ring for the Holidays so we could announce to our family members who didn't know our news yet! It's gorgeous, perfectly-crafted and sturdy. I've gotten so many compliments! Having custom rings that my Fiance and I designed together just felt right for us and Brian went...
Read moreI stopped in to meet with Brian while I was visiting from New Jersey. I became very confident that he could reset some rings, which I had been wanting to do for years. He had suggestions, made models, and shared them with me before we proceeded.
One ring is a wedding band which used some stones from my wedding band and engagement ring, made to fit my mother's diamond. The other is a new ring made using my engagement diamond and new sapphires which he provided.
Both exceed my expectations. I hadn't done anything with them previously because I wasn't positive what I wanted and I hadn't found someone who was able to figure this out like Brian did.
I had the confidence to drop off rings which meant a lot to me and I picked up new...
