TDLR-
Pros- Great selection of advanced boardgames/Quite a few sit-and-play used games/Clean store/Good Drinks/Friendly customers/Local Events
Cons- Owner is rude and indifferent to new customers when asked questions/TCG stock is lacking here in favor of Hurricane location/Tight, uncomfortable play areas.
PROS
As far as a wide ranged selection goes Board Room has a fantastic, diverse stock of advanced board games and party games. This comes with the caveat that you're not gonna get many cheap games here. Most advanced board games cost 40-50 dollars or more. That's not Board Room's fault though, that's just anywhere. I've probably bought 800 dollars in board games here in the last couple months and it wasn't that many of them.
However, if you want to try out many of the games before you buy, or you just don't wanna spend that money on something you'll break out once, they have a shelf full of used games that you can play. These have passed through the hands of those who may not be considerate, so some are missing pieces, but it's still a good way to get an idea.
As far as game shops go, it's clean and not at all grungy or cluttered. While there are alot of shelves that take up room, most are along the walls or in their own sections.
They do sell beer on tap here and light snacks.
The community I've met here has all been fantastic, friendly, and generally open people.
They do host local events such as launch parties, Digimon/Lorcana tournaments and Magic Game Nights.
CONS
This is probably my biggest issue with the Board Room and is what stops me from coming back here regularly. I'd probably be doing the events and tournaments here constantly but now I just kind of drop by if there is a game I want for my weekly game night. The Owner. We have had 3 interactions with him, I'm a friendly guy, my wife is an extremely friendly person, and rarely do I get met with such indifference. The first time I went to the shop he was there, I tried to introduce myself with a "Just wanted to say hi, I'm so-and-so" and relieved the flattest "okay" I've ever had in my life before he just walked away. Next time was for a Lorcana event. My wife went up to ask if her name had been called for seating cause she was in the bathroom and apologized. He stared at her for a full 15 seconds like she was an alien, before replying with a huge attitude and acting like she was the biggest bother in the world. He asked her name, she said it, he glanced at the computer "said I don't think so" then just started shouting names as she thanked him and walked away. And the third time, admittedly I didn't even try. I bought a board game from him cause he was working the register, asked him if I could use my reward points, and he sighed and typed in the email, tapped the card reader machine for me to put my card in, grabbed a bag, put the game in, handed it to me, and didn't say a word. Not a "have a nice day" or anything.
I'm a pretty understanding, laid back guy so I get being a store owner is stressful, hard work and I don't know if that's the reason he doesn't give my wife or I the time of the day, but it's off-putting. TCG/Geek shops are supposed to be a place to go to spend money you shouldn't be spending on things you don't really need yet are still happy about. Luckily I don't suffer from social anxiety or low self esteem, but I know alot of people who do that enjoy game shops and I don't think he fosters a very good environment to help with that.
Next Con is that many times when I go in there asking for specific products, such as Magic Commanders, Pokémon collections, and Flesh and Blood, 9/10 times I hear "we don't have it here but our Hurricane location does". More annoying that anything but there could be a reason when it comes to foot traffic between stores.
When playing events it's very shoulder to shoulder and back to back. There isn't alot of floor space for tables so they can fit about 4 fold up ones besides the permanent ones they have.

South Charleston, WV – In a world of fleeting digital entertainment, The Boardroom on RHL Boulevard stands as a testament to the enduring power of tangible hobbies and genuine community. This establishment has masterfully crafted itself into a one-stop shop for enthusiasts of comic books, board games, and card games, fostering an environment that is both welcoming and exceptionally catered to its patrons.
For the avid comic book collector, The Boardroom is a treasure trove. As a devoted follower of Sonic The Hedgehog, I can personally attest to their unparalleled commitment. They have consistently secured every main issue and variant I've sought, but their service extends far beyond simple procurement. The knowledgeable staff takes a genuine interest in their customers' passions, often setting aside titles they believe will resonate and even recommending collectibles, such as the occasional Sonic statue that finds its way onto their shelves. It is this personalized and thoughtful approach that has earned them my unwavering loyalty.
The vibrant energy of The Boardroom extends well into its dedicated gaming spaces. The clatter of dice, the shuffling of cards, and the triumphant cries of victory are the store's daily soundtrack. Regular tournaments for popular card games like Magic: The Gathering, Lorcana, One Piece, and Pokémon draw in a spirited community of players, offering a space for friendly competition and camaraderie.
But the experience doesn't end with organized play. A vast library of board games is available for patrons to enjoy at their leisure. Whether you're a seasoned strategist or a casual player looking for a fun afternoon, there's a game for every taste. To complement the gaming experience, The Boardroom offers a selection of snacks and, for those of age, a respectable array of beers, making it an ideal spot to unwind and socialize.
What truly sets The Boardroom apart, however, is its people. The staff's passion for the hobbies they represent is palpable, and their welcoming demeanor makes every visit a pleasure. They are the cornerstone of the establishment, fostering an inclusive atmosphere where newcomers feel as comfortable as seasoned regulars.
In an age where dedicated hobby stores can be few and far between, The Boardroom is a shining example of a business that not only understands its products but, more importantly, understands its community. For its exceptional service, diverse offerings, and unwavering commitment to its patrons, The Boardroom will always have my business. It is, without a doubt, a cornerstone of the geek and gaming culture in the...
Read moreI no longer live in West Virginia, but I used to live in Charleston and discovered my love of the Pokémon TCG at this store. I began playing at The Board Room in 2022 and was instantly welcomed by the community. On top of the welcoming community, I found great competition and quickly honed my skills against some incredibly strong local players such as Zach Smart and Toby Eyre. Since moving, I have qualified for the Pokémon TCG World Championship, and I will always give credit to the Board Room for helping me find a community where I belong and a competitive outlet that helped me improve and achieve my dream of making it to Worlds. In my opinion, no store in WV does a better job of fostering community than the Board Room does, and I always make sure to pay them a visit when those country roads bring me back to the...
