I visited this store for the first time on Friday with my sister. Unfortunately, we spent no more than 10 minutes there because the cashier made us feel uncomfortable. She did not greet us when we first walked in, though she did acknowledge us by coldly announcing that we could let her know if we needed anything. I started browsing through the bead section which wasnât easy because there was a table, stacked with supplies, close to it. When I tried to get around the table, I almost tripped and when I looked up the cashier was staring at me with a very judgmental expression. That was when I knew that I was being profiled, and yes, it was racially biased because the other 2 shoppers were both Caucasian and she engaged with them differently. And going based off their conversation- they were not regulars. I then stopped shopping for myself and joined my sister, but I felt obligated to keep my hands open and visible. My phone rang twice, but I chose to not to answer it to avoid reaching inside my purse. When I happened to glance in the cashiers direction- we made eye contact which only proved that she WAS watching me.
I wanted to leave so I asked my sister for the time- her response was âMy phone is in my purse and I donât feel comfortable grabbing it.â After that, I told her we were leaving and she asked me if we should âjust buy something.â In other words, the cashierâs behavior influenced her to want to buy something that she did not 100% want and that is what upset me the most.
UPDATE: Fortunately when I searched the stores website I came across a picture of the cashier. Her name is Kendall and her picture is attached, but it might not show because of copyright. So if youâre curious as to what she looks like- visit their âabout usâ section on the companyâs website. Honestly, she looks like a very nice person, but looks can be deceiving.
Update; Reply to Ownerâs Response:
Cheers to you for trying to implement a diverse and all inclusive shopping environment. Unfortunately that was not the impression I received when visiting your bead store (especially) because of this employeeâs behavior. To be âfair,â 10 minutes is more than enough time to draw a conclusion on an unsettling situation as it is relatively easy to group minorities together based on stereotypes, statistics and probability factors. If she REALLY was watching me to see if I needed help then she would have reacted differently to me nearly falling. I did not judge your business in itâs entirety. Instead, I rated my shopping experience with ONE of your employees who made me feel less than welcome in your bead store. Though it is interesting that earlier reviewers expressed feeling judged; poorly treated; followed and even profiled yet my rating prompted a response.
However, you responding with your âmission statementâ in an effort to discredit my review, as well as providing excuses for your employeeâs behavior does not change my experience with her. And your backhanded response/apology will not encourage me to...
Read moreI wish I didnât have to leave even one Star. My husband has previously shopped numerous times here for my gifts through the years. Last year prior to Christmas he went to find a gift. He was completely ignored by 2 staff people who were not busy at all. One was chatting with a friend and the other would walk way when he approached. He left frustrated, angry, and without making a purchase. This year he gave the store another chance and tried it again. Same story. One female employee would not even look up at him when he was standing right across the counter from her and saying âExcuse meâ, and then âCould I get some help?â She completely and rudely ignored him. Another one asked him to move to show something to someone else and never acknowledged him besides pushing him aside. âIâll be right with youâ or âDo you need help?â were never uttered by this rude sales clerk. There was also a male employee who helped several customers who came in after him and never approached him as he was standing at the jewelry cases waiting for assistance. I cannot believe how rudely he was treated. I am disgusted by the lack of customer service and rudeness of the employees. We will not be back and neither will my friends or...
Read moreFirst, I visited the shop that has all the cool rocks! They were great! A little pricey, but hey, you do what you can. I left my mask in the car, but wasnât scrutinized when entering and was allowed to browse without a mask. My experience there was great there. Got some cool rocks and then went to the bead store. **I walked in (to the bead shop) and was asked to put on a mask, I obliged since I had forgotten mine in the car. A short time after entering, two young ladies working in the shop proceeded to talk (loudly) about âthey donât care what the other shop is doing, theyâre enforcing the masks todayâ and continued to talk about the topic âenforcing masksâ the whole time I was there. I donât think thatâs the most professional thing to talk about, so I decided to leave. Especially after they commented about an older lady that also works there, but doesnât enforce âthe ruleâ and she âshould because of her ageâ. Shortly after I left, I notice the two other groups of people who came in, leave shortly after I did. I believe that isnât the greatest topic for employees to talk about loudly with customers in the store, since it can be quite the...
