It brings me absolutely no joy to write this review as the experience I just had in the Marshalls at the Gateway Shopping Center was one of the more ugly moments of my life. I regularly shop at this Marshalls but the last two times I have been in by myself I have experienced what I can only describe as racial profiling.
The first incident was much less pronounced than my recent experience. That time, a few weeks ago, I had a single employee who was clearly following me around the store. It was in no way subtle and I thought it was a unique experience because whenever I shop there with my partner, who is white, I have never had to deal with anything like that. It was a little annoying but it was insignificant enough that I brushed the memory of it aside. What just happened though I will not forgot.
This time I did not just have one employee following me but four employees that were completely tactless in their extreme and invasive monitoring of me. Two managers and two workers caused me to feel physically harassed merely for shopping, practically running to the different locations of the store where I would move to next. Management was hovering outside of the dressing room after I tried on my clothes despite having been stocking on the other end of the store moments before, and scurrying away as soon as I came out. All the workers minus one manager who were harassing me while I was shopping were for some reason no longer needed on the floor when I approached the register. They too were suddenly needed at the registers despite there being no change in the line except for myself. I watched the worker nod approval to her manager as my card went through and I watched the manager scowl at me as I left. With that scowl it felt as though she were wishing I was actually a criminal so that her delusions would be affirmed. Overall the shopping experience felt unsafe.
The bigotry on display at this location is absolutely appalling, it was painful being treated like a criminal and it was sad to watch the exasperated expressions of the workers as they were made to be complicit in what was clearly another racist goose chase that their management was leading them on.
I will suggest to all non-white people that if they do choose to give this ignorant management their money make sure they bring a white friend with them unless they also want to experience the same physical and emotional harassment I have just undergone.
I will not be shopping here again and am recommending the...
Read moreGreat store, great selection, not much in the way of customer service though. Compared to their nearby sister stores TJ Maxx and HomeGoods, Marshalls had always been my go-to when living in Eugene. Most especially for housewares, planters, decor & linens; an over all excellent and quality selection of products. They also have a very decent pet section, okay clothes for men but mainly undergarments. Seasonal especially Christmas found me some particularly great items at this store! All in all fun shopping experience.
Now as for the customer service, at least from my personal experience, there was none. The girls in apparel had to have been MUTE and front end staff had nothing better to say then "TJX CARD??" lol...learned why from my very short stint in a part time position I regretably got here at one point. From the cliques, to rude & awkward managers, the gossip, unorganized backroom and a know it all back-room staff this place was very unwelcoming and not conducive to a happy work environment.
But alas this is a review for the shopping experience and yeah as aformentioned it was all-in-all...
Read moreI went here and after looking around for about 15 minutes I politely asked one of the associates if they sold any stockings, hosiery or panty hose. The associate said she wasn’t sure and then said that she’d call a manager to assist me. After standing around waiting for a few moments the manager I can only assume, ember wouldn’t even approach me she gave me a disrespectful look and with a tone full of annoyance yelled down the aisle no, No we don’t sell those. That’s it,nothing else. Not a suggestion or any offer to assist me in any regard 6 words and that’s it. I’ll also make it clear that they had a few hundred for free use and disposal in the shoe try on area, 1 linear foot to my right. I’d expect a store associate and a store manager to be of a little more help than that, and maybe a little bit kinder. I can only say that I felt judged and ostracized for being a man and needing to purchase a pair of stockings. This was my first time in Marshall’s, and my last time at...
