Tatton Baird is an absolute gem of a business. Frankly, the word “business” is too common of a word to describe this place. Chandler, Covi, and Tommy are artisans, in the highest, most traditional sense of the word. When you step into Tatton Baird, you step back into a time where skill, craftsmanship, and style are true ideals, not marketing puffery.
These hats turn heads. On a recent trip to Glacier National Park, I was stopped several times and asked about my hat and where I bought it. I felt like an evangelist, out preaching the good news that there is more to life than baseball hats, polyester, and one-size-fits-all fast fashion. A gentleman from Tennessee was so impressed that he made plans with his wife to visit Springville, Utah on their way back home, despite how far it would take them out of their way.
If you’re curious, the hat in question is a whiskey Montana Peak, in 100% western weight beaver with a pencil curled brim and grosgrain ribbon band. If that’s Greek to you, take a trip to Tatton Baird and they’ll teach you all about it.
When I first visited this place I knew nothing about hats. I was shocked at how much time Chandler and Covi spent showing me every little detail about hat making. I was also shocked at the complete lack of pressure to buy. They were simply happy to share their passion with me, regardless of the sales outcome. Their enthusiasm was contagious and I walked out feeling like I had been introduced to an art form I never knew existed, and now I could never live without.
I returned shortly after and ordered my first hat. They walked me through every little detail of my hat, from the fur content to the font they would use to emboss my name into the band, providing style recommendations drawn from their wealth of experience at every step. Normally I’m prone to analysis paralysis, but they made it easy to design a hat that I still love years later.
I have yet to visit any other establishment and have the same level of experience I get each time I visit Tatton Baird. It’s just that good. In fact, I just picked up my seventh hat today.
It’s incredible that we have a place like this in Utah. Even if you don’t think you’re in the market for a custom hat, you’ve got to check this place out. The shop is built out like it’s been around since the Gilded Age. It’s like walking into a working museum. Chandler, Covi, and Tommy will treat you like family even if it’s your first visit. If you’re anywhere near Springville, Utah and you haven’t dropped into Tatton Baird yet, you’re robbing yourself of an...
Read moreI bought my first hat from Tatton Baird 4 years ago. You aren't just getting a hat when you buy from Tatton Baird, you are getting a custom piece of Americana that is 100% made in the USA. Regardless of style, there is no hatter that offers better quality and incredible customer service, full stop. My hats get looks and compliments everywhere I go. These hats will stand out because exceptionalism is increasingly rare. Quality makes a difference. Even if you want to just go into the shop to take a look around, it's beautiful. Honestly, it feels like you've stepped back in time 120 years. It did take several months to get the color in that I selected, and you can expect a timeline for your hat. Straw is much quicker than 100% beaver felt. Quality takes time, and you'll be glad you waited. Chandler & Covi made me exactly what I wanted. They take incredible pride in making each hat by hand and I wear mine every day in all weather conditions. I've since ordered a straw hat for peak summer from them and just placed an order for another felt hat. I have friends and clients too who have ordered these hats and, without exception, they LOVE their hats more than they thought they would. If you're uncertain about style, color, or look, Covi will give you options, expert advice, and help you feel confident in your selection. She, along with Tommy, will make sure that your hat reflects the attitude and look you desire. Don't just take my word for it, stop in to this incredible shop and check it out...
Read moreBe careful, you may never get your hat! 3 months ago I was asked to pay $250.00 for my hat deposit. I was inappropriately charged twice, making a $500.00 deposit, which I wasn’t too concerned with at first. Since that time, I have made 10 separate attempts to contact Tatton Baird. Not one time have I received a phone call back. I have left 3 voice mails, sent two Instagram messages, texted the number it says to twice, and sent two different emails showing proof of payment. I have personally stopped by the store on 4 separate occasions during their “business hours” and they have been closed every time. I have never left a bad review for any company, but having paid $500.00 and never hearing back about fitting, or that it’s even being worked on is concerning and upsetting.
UPDATE: I did get my credit card fraud department involved and was refunded my $500.00 nearly 5 months after my initial purchase. The owner was very nice but unfortunately the lack of communication and the inability to reach anyone left a bad taste and no confidence the hat would ever get done. Very good quality hats it seems, sad I didn't end...
