A gem right in the middle of Stamford! I bought myself a membership, as that is key to supporting independent theaters, and it's given me motivation to head out to see movies on the big screen again. Membership gets you reduced ticket prices which cannot be beat. The staff is lovely and the theater is old-time cool. They show first run movies and have special attractions- we loved seeing Christmas Vacation on the big screen again- it made for a great family afternoon to get our holiday spirit on. Read moreThe Avon is a quaint and charming old theater in downtown Stamford, showing a variety of art films, retrospectives, and the like. It's a cool place where I've been a few times. Maybe it doesn't have some of the bells and whistles like some of the major movie chains, but going there and seeing something like The Widow Clicquot, which was my latest viewing there, is really enjoyable. Feels like going back in time, yet it's modern with stadium seating ( although the seat cushion was totally worn out and uncomfortable. The theater did have a musty smell which was confusing? Why don't they use air freshener? And the ticket prices!! $14.50 for a noon matinee? WOW. But it's worth going once to experience the past. Next time I'll just go to the Majestic Bow Tie theater for more realistic...
