The "List"

Two years ago, I was at a milestone birthday. Finally having achieved the financial means to purchase the Rolex that I had wanted for many years, I was excited about the possibility of finally owning my first Rolex. I spoke with the nice salesman and after a discussion about the demand exceeding the supply due to Covid, he offered to add my name to the "List". All I had to do was send an email about why I wanted a Rolex, etc. I assumed it was to help filter out the flippers, so I did so the next day. I had waited this long, what was a little longer.

Over the last two years, I have called, emailed and even stopped by to find out if there was one available for me. Each time I was told, "we got the your name on the list and we will call you when one comes in for you". Last week marked two years since I got on the "list" and with demand falling, supply increasing and the secondary market being flush with watches, I guessed that the time must be getting closer. I could go to the secondary market, but I wanted the "AD" experience. This time when I stopped in to Mayors, I decided to ask some more pointed questions, because until now, I thought it was first come first serve or there was at least some priority given to those who had been on the list for a long time. I do realize that Rolex AD's give watches to priority customers, but I just wanted a regular Bluesy. I talked to the Rolex Salesperson.

Where am I on the list? I see your name here on the list as of 2 years ago. (Same as before, time to get more pointed.)

How many are you getting in? I don't have that information.

How many have you gotten in in the last 2 years? I don't have that information.

How many names are on list ahead of me? The list doesn't work that way.

What if I agree to buy something else? You cannot move up the list as there is no list to move up. (Finally)

It was at this point that I realized the list isn't a waiting list, but a mailing list and they are only assigned to preferred customers. If they get one in and they need to sell it, the have a list of people they can contact to see if they want to buy it.

I realize I probably should have asked some more questions when I first got on the list and found this out sooner, but I didn't. I now realize that it won't be possible for me to realize my dream of purchasing a Rolex from this dealer, but in the end I did get the Rolex AD experience. The team at Mayor's International Plaza is absolutely phenomenal!

I stopped in for the first time about 2-1/2 months ago to inquire about obtaining a Rolex to celebrate some upcoming milestones (training for my first marathon and my 45th birthday). I was met by Adam Candia who blew me away! I was already a bit nervous with the idea of purchasing my first luxury timepiece. Adam was 100% welcoming, never once pressured me and really just shot the breeze with me for 15-20 minutes. Adam showed me the "exhibition" watches that they had in the case, while talking with me about what I was interested in. Adam took down my info and registered my interest in a GMT Master II.

I was caught the bug, and really got excited with the idea of what type of personal collection that I would like put together. I soon realized that while I was still willing to hold off on that GMT to celebrate my upcoming milestones, I wanted a Datejust 41 to now be my first watch sooner than later. I shot Adam a text and register my interest for that watch too.

Over the past 2-1/2 months, I stopped by a handful of times to really just say hi. Adam took the time to introduce me to the Boutique Director Abbe Loewenthal and his Sales Manager Nick Squitieri. The entire team was always very welcoming. They would always ask me how my training was going, and showed genuine interest in me. I REALLY appreciate that!

Today, while shopping at the IP, I stopped by just to say hi again. Adam walked over and told me, "I have one Rolex available for purchase today". I was WAY caught off guard by this. Adam took it out of the case and showed me. It was a DJ41!! Not the exact color/spec that I originally asked about, but I was definitely intrigued. Right away I told Adam that I liked it. Adam's response was, "don't do it unless you love it". Once again, Adam offered zero pressure. He was extremely patient with me while I thought about it. I eventually decided that this DJ41 with roman numerals on a white dial, on a oyster bracelet with a white gold fluted bezel was going to be my very first Rolex. I am absolutely in love with it!

Interesting that I see so many people with their watch purchases from Mayors in these reviews. I wish I had that same level of success. I joined the registry for a known timepiece in 2021. I was fairly warned the wait time for purchase could be 12-18 months, possibly a little more. An explanation that I found reasonable, as it was explained to me upfront by Maria. As part of the initial experience, it was attempted to upsell me into other watch brands while I "waited" -- which I thoughtfully declined. Fast track to 2024, as I have now been on this registry for 33 months. This time I went in and more directly asked where exactly I was on the registry. The response? I was told it was a registry and they couldn't provide me with that information. Why? I'm not asking for other people's information or details. I have friends that have been on other registries for the exact watch -- that now have theirs in hand. Every reasonable inquiry I made was directed back to "we cannot provide details on our registry." Questions like: "Have there been others who have received watches (same watch, color etc), who had registered after myself? You can tell when someone is uncomfortable about having to state truth. Such was the case here when the response was once again accompanied by a vague "policy" statement --- the aforementioned deflection to not being allowed to state details about their registry. So. Essentially 33 months wasted on this Mayors registry. The intention is to now to purchase a different watch brand, probably somewhere else -- with the added consequence to me of a higher pricing structure than 2021. A lesson learned when it comes to Mayors Jewelers here. Certainly, a sub-optimal attempted purchasing experience.

As an added update: I just read some of the responses from Mayors to lower-rated reviews. These responses seem to be largely "cookie-cutter", with the company stating the recurring subjects expressed are always taken very seriously. Yet the trend seems to be continued issues with the same...
