I am currently a member of this gym but after my rude encounter with the owner I am looking for a different one. I joined this gym (first time EVER joining a gym) because of its location and hours. I've never been a member to a gym before and don't know how to use most of the equipment (and I certainly was not given any instructions upon signing up) so I don't mind that it doesn't have "frills". The day I joined the gym the young man who was working behind the counter informed me it was his first day and had never signed anyone up before. I assured him this was not a problem as I had previously gone online to sign up for a 3 day trial that included a discounted sign up fee. The paperwork seemed new to him and he struggled to explain the different packages (at one point even suggested that this gym may not be the right fit for my needs). We had a conversation about the $25/mo fee and I was verbally given the option to have the fee automatically withdrawn from my account on the 1st or 15th of the month. I chose the 15th as I get paid on the 5th. After taking quite some time with the paperwork, the owner approached asking why it was taking so long. He hurriedly filled out the rest of the form and ushered me to sign. I was thrown off by his approach but didn't think much of it. I paid cash that day and for the following 2 months. On the 3rd month and on the 4th month I my card was charged on the first day of the month instead of the 5th as I had discussed with the young man. This caused an overdraft both times ($35 each, $70 total). I am so harried that I didnt notice until the second charge. I went into Synergy to explain the confusion and was hoping for some sort of compensation or at least an acknowledgment of this error. The owner approached while I was explaining to the lady at the desk. He rudely said "let me find your paperwork, you will see this is your fault." (Apparently there is a box option to check off and he insisted that it must have been marked for the 1st because I signed up in the beginning of the month) I spent the next 20 minutes watching both of them shuffle papers and dig through the filing cabinet with no avail. They never found my paperwork. I gave my name and was assured I would be contacted. I have never heard anything back from anyone at the gym. Even if he checked the box to be charged on the 1st, that is not what I discussed with the young man (whom I've never seen again) who signed me up. I am a single woman who goes to school full time and works full time. I am trying to live healthier lifestyle and better myself. Budgeting for a $25 fee and paying an additional $70 was a huge detriment and caused a real hardshipfor me. A simple acknowledgment of the mistake and an apology would have served just fine. Any additional reimbursement would have been excellent and really shown customer appreciation but was not expected. I am beyond disappointed in the way this was handled. So please future gym member, give your money to a different...
Read moreThis is a decent, but very poorly managed gym. So, much so that I joined the Franklin Square Synergy, utilizing Lynbrook solely for the kids' room hours when Franklin Square did not offer.
The major problem is that this gym, in terms of service is completely unmanaged. So, you cannot blame the staff. The staff spends most of their time looking at cell phones and looking at customers as an interuption to their e and d entertainment. This is a culture that has been developed inside he gym.
Moving towards some specifics, On May 29th, I called and asked the person who received the call whether they would have kids hours on May 30th. She replied, Yes. I asked her to double check and she gave me hours that the kids's room would be open. On May 30th, I loaded my two kids into the car, to get a workout and give my wife a break. I walked in and the person at the desk, looked up from his cell phone and said, "Sorry, no kids care today." I told him it was not his fault because there person who gave me the information was a different gender. He then glanced back down at his phone. We, parents rely on accurate information and getting to gym is not as hoc, it takes planning. So, proper information is essential.
The next horror story happened when for several weeks I did not have my scan card. Each time I asked to sign me in, the person at the desk, would look at me with anger, as I, again, interrupted their e and d enterainment. At one point, I was told, "I can't sign you in, you need to buy a new tage for $10.00. FYI...A replacement tag at the Franklin Square location is $5.00.
Moving along, on or about April 1, 2016, there was very little hot water in the Men's locker room. I went to the front desk, interrupted somebody's cell phone activity to let them know. They replied, "That is as hot as it gets. We are not allowed to make it hotter. You should shower at home anyway.
Next issue, around January 1, 2015, we were surprised with a $25.00 enhancement fee for the gym. For the next 12 months, there was not one tangible enhancement. In the same vein, when I moved my primary Synergy account to Franklin Square, I was told by the desk person at Synergy, Lynbrook, that I could keep my membership there for only $10.00/mo. Guess what, $10.00 turned into $20.00/mo and I have not be able to get that corrected.
I believe this is a complete management issue and not a person issue. Leadership and customer service has been replaced by the acceptance of worker attendance. This is not fair to the paying customers of to the...
Read moreNot as good as it used to be. I used to use this place back when it was known as Powerhouse Gym. While the owners clearly invested a good deal of money in renovating the bathrooms and making the place appear more upscale in order increase female membership, they sacrificed the space traditionally used for stretching and removed all the mats for it. If you work out, you're going to need to stretch! They have a room used for group exercises that they keep locked and refuse to open up to regular members when classes are not in session.
This gym has always felt a little crowded, but combined with a lack of cardio machines (it can take up to 20 minutes for an open treadmill or elliptical) and proper space to stretch, it seems to me that the owners made a drive to dramatically increase membership beyond the facility's ability to meet customers' needs.
Not only that, but the employees there are generally rude, unhelpful and have pretty bad attitudes. On top of that, I repeatedly asked for a personal trainer and it took 6 months for one to contact me (by then of course I had already found one outside that gym)!
If you don't mind a cramped, overcrowded gym with rude staff members and putting yourself at risk for several muscle tears, then this is the place for you. My advice to make the longer trip to Planet Fitness or find a Gold's Gym...
