Barner Books — Local services in Town of New Paltz

I was really impressed by this bookstore. The selection here feels very carefully curated. When I went to look for books on a desired subject, everything there was reputable and high quality. There were even some impressive works from authors I'd never heard of before. They had antique typewriters and beautiful journals for sale (cloth-covered, paperback, and leather-bound). The floorboards were a bit creaky but not overly so (so it was charming, not concerning).There were very many shelves, but there was enough room to stand and walk around comfortably. There were chairs scattered throughout the store to sit in (though, it was more for a quick sit while looking than a place to lounge). Overall, I really loved my time here. I was very satisfied with the books I got and the atmosphere while I was there. The staff and fellow customers seemed to all have good spirits and were pleasant to be around. I'd highly recommend this place...

The atmosphere in this store is great, i love the small trinkets as well as the books and great prices. I would rate it 5 stars however both times i had been in the store the lady working at the register had been short with me and snippy. once i wrote off as i was with some friends from the college and thought we might’ve annoyed her. however the second time i was with my parents and we were simply trying to help her as she was on the phone as we were ready to ring up and she got snappy with us again. Very sad as the vibes are great in the store just not the best customer service. not sure if they are not a fan of college students or what...

We were just passing through town and stumbled upon Barner Books and were positively delighted by the shop. It had a great selection of used books and fun items to shop from. I particularly loved the occasional curated sections (mini books! great vintage editions!) where I nabbed a lovely vintage and pristine copy of Middlemarch. The shopkeeper was also so kind and great to chat with - just a very positive experience all around. I will surely be back to New Paltz for Barner...
