I shop at Black Cat about once a week and it's made it so easy for me to make low and zero waste swaps. I like to bring my own recycled jars and containers from home and fill them up with whatever I need-- but they also have jars available for purchase and some which are free for those who need them as well.
They have all of the essentials I need to stock my fridge and pantry-- Grains, Pasta, Oils, Sauces, Flour and other Baking Supplies, Honey, Spices, Vegetarian Protein-- as well as ready to eat snacks, candy, tea, locally sourced baked goods, and some food that's homemade by the owners like BBQ sauce, jams, pickles, vegan dairy products, and (my fave) fresh seitan.
There are also a ton of cleaning supplies, personal care products, zines, gift items, and cosmetics. I'm always finding something new and interesting when I visit since they are constantly expanding what they carry based on the needs and interests of their customers.
And on top of that-- the owners are super helpful and kind! I feel like they're constantly going above and beyond from the simple stuff like helping you fill your containers while you shop and offering recommendations to bigger things like hosting mending nights where they provide tools and guidance for people in the community looking to fix...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreBlack Cat is by far my favorite place to shop bulk in New Paltz as a resident. It is a great option for environmentally conscious people like myself who want a full range of pantry and household products without blowing their budget. The space is clean, cozy and inviting, tucked away in a charming old house just off of Main St, and easily accessible from the bike/ped trails. Be sure to check out products that are made in-house, like their delicious kale chips or earth-friendly detergents. A lot of work has been put into sourcing products locally and organically (transparency that even other local retailers often lack!) Owners Jill and Jim are lovely people who are happy to help, make recommendations and answer questions. I canāt say enough good things about this sweet little shop. Absolutely a must-visit even if you are just stopping by New Paltz...

She has paper bags, but also sells different sizes jars, some of which are pre-packed with the nearby bulk foods, ready to go! As an alternative, she kindly carries a random assortment of preused and washed jars and other containers for free, when she can acquire them to give away for you bulk needs.
I was traveling through and am glad I found this environmentalland socially conscious store and store. The owner Jill is awesome and kind and vibes well with her charming store. The world needs more wholesome stores like this!
