Rock and Snow — Local services in Town of New Paltz

A great store with an amazing selection of gear. The staff really know their stuff and happily give advice on anything from gear choice to planning your day in the surrounding Shawangunks (Gunks) lands or (in my case) advice on a particular rock climb!

The store isn't huge but they carefully choose high quality gear and brands to fill the place; dispensing with the lower-quality and "filler" items found across the big box stores. Since most of the staff are very active in various outdoor sports that personal "product-testing" feedback works within a short time-frame!

I went into rock and snow looking to buy crampons, but had no experience hiking the catskills in winter so I had a lot of questions. All of the staff were very patient and helpful and it was clear that they were all sincere in making the best suggestions rather than trying to make a sale.

Rich, the owner gave me a lot of useful advice about what hikes to take and more importantly, discouraged me from taking some hikes I shouldn't. He even fielded a call from me at the trailhead asking for directions.

They have an awesome consignment shop next door, the store has curated a great selection and the inventory is displayed really well.

It's wonderful to see a small business like this prosper for almost 50 years....

The personal attention and customer service of this shop never ceases to amaze me! I needed micro spikes and brought my boot in to test the fit. The sales guy took the time to open the boxes of a couple different sizes and explained the pros and cons of each fit while we tried them on my boot. I walked away with the confidence of knowing that I've got a great set of spikes and a great fit for when I need them. This was not the first time I've experienced such great customer service here, but this time, I just felt compelled to let others know what a gem of a shop we have in our neighborhood....
