I had a terrible experience here. I've been doing yoga 15 years and never have I experienced this.
My friend and I prepaid for a 5:30pm class on their website. First time going. We planned to meet there. The monsoon had caused unexpected road blockages from fallen trees. I feared I may get there a few min late so I tried to call. Realized there was no phone number on the website. I texted my friend and she held me a spot while I found street parking.
I arrived at the studio door at 5:32 but it was locked. No one in sight. No phone number or signs. I texted my friend to let her know I was locked out. Someone walking by told me the owner/manager was same owner Brooklyn pizza and Sky bar. Walked over to Sky Bar. The employees said the manager Tony was out of town for an undefined time. I asked for a number. I asked if there was anyone else in charge to speak to. They said there was no one, no number, just an email. The employees were friendly yet unable to help, despite agreeing.
I then got a text back from my friend that she unlocked the door. I walked back over, opened to door and into class.. Immediately I was met with an enraged yoga instructor who loudly told me to get out. I told him I had prepaid and was locked out since 5:32. He said the door gets locked at 5:30, no exceptions. As a first time to the studio, I asked where that was listed. Not on the door not on the site. There isn't even a phone number to call. He didn't seem to care. He gave no answer. Just repeated I leave in an angry tone. My friend (a fitness instructor herself) was so upset by his tone she got up and left with me. We went back over to Sky to regroup out of the sweltering heat. A guy there who overheard me speaking to employees sympathized. He was a friend of the owner, and kindly offered $5 to offset some of the class cost.
Afterward, I emailed the owner Tony, no response yet and it's been a week. This place appears to be unprofessional. The instructor had no issue taking our money and refusing to provide service, over an unlisted yet necessary detail. No sensable explanation, no apologies, no kindness, no refunds. I will encourage other yoga...
Read moreThis is our 3rd class with Joel. He is a gentle man with a very pleasant manner. We truly appreciate the peaceful, understanding and instructive way he shares his practice and wisdom. Michael & Donalee Fischoff
As a follow-up a month later, we have become more involved with the 4th Avenue Yoga family and have had classes with Tamara, Michelle (and one with Kiki (sp?). All are very warm and welcoming and excellent instructors! We are very pleased and grateful!
Addendum April, 2024 We have been attending 4th Avenue Yoga for 4+ months. Early on we wrote a review that primarily featured our appreciation of Joel. We would now like to recognize the 2 other instructors whom we practice with on a regular basis, Tamara and Michelle. Both are genuinely kind people who make all who enter feel welcome and comfortable. Each practitioner is accepted for who they are and where they may in their practice, both overall and/or on any particular day. As an older couple, we sincerely appreciate the total acceptance of the aforementioned instructors along with their occasional substitutes. We continue to feel grateful for our 4th Avenue Yoga experience(s). Michael &...
Read moreOk so anyone who knows me would know I love yoga & I’m everywhere. That being said , this place didn’t hit for me even though it checked some of the things on my list that usually make me fall in love with a studio. I came in to do a double class drop jn , vinyasa- hot & vinyasa warm with soundbath . Overall it’s not going to be on my top10 places to yoga out here but I may be back for another class one day it’s not terrible, just doesn’t come close to some of the yoga experiences I’ve had in town.
PROS ; Heated classes Affordable $9 drop in Mirrors Ambient dark lighting Friendly instructors Mats available to borrow no charge Cute location I actually learned a couple new posture terms!
CONS ; both classes were so slowwwww (should be labeled as slow flow not vinyasa ) I like it hotter & faster for vinyasa
Parking - sucks
ROACHES - yep borrowed a studio mat and a fricken roach fell out… not a great first impression. Took a minute to shake that off ewww.
During soundbath instructor opened door , It’s 4th so it’s loud and distracting outside . It would have been nice to just...
