Great Food and Cozy Courtyard On a recent visit to Opa's Best in Tucson, workers were wearing t-shirts announcing their new Tucson location called Opa's Grill on 4th Ave., so we tried it. The building looks like it was a car service center previously, but they have done a super job of remodeling the building with very current decor. We loved the small courtyard dining area between their building and the Mexican restaurant next door. There are umbrellas, bushes and trees along with shadows from the buildings that would provide cover from the often intense Arizona sun. They also have gas heaters in that area for cooler weather dining. Just as at Opa's Best, a complimentary starter plate (Meze) of hummus, tzatziki, cucumber and pita was brought to our table as soon as we sat down. They have a good selection of tap beers and a good tasting brewed iced tea. We started with the Octopus. Tender pieces of braised and grilled octopus with olive oil, oregano and red wine. A very large portion, tender and not at all rubbery. We both had the Classic Gyro Sandwich with Greek Salad. The gyro meat is outstanding, piled high on a soft pita and a refreshingly tangy tzatziki sauce. With the welcome platter and octopus, we ate very little of our sandwich and brought home enough for another dinner. The salad was excellent and they gladly brought me more feta cheese to add to my salad. We look forward to going...
Read moreExcellent Greek restaurant on the old 4th street district! We were looking for healthy salad place and this one caught our eye and it did not disappoint! Before we even ordered, the server brought a plate of pita breads, yogurt and hummus spread with sliced cucumbers. Then we ordered grilled octopus (appetizer), Horiatiki salad (aka quintessential Greek salad), and combo platter (gyro and beef). The portions are HUGE! The appetizer is the size of an entree and the octopus is very tender and flavorful (cooked in wine and herb). I also love my Greek salad as it strikes a great balance of refreshing and flavorful (from sweet onions and feta cheese). I just wish they could add olive oil not the salad though.
All the servers are very tentative. Restaurant has many Greek paintings and statues as decorations. Definitely recommend to anyone who likes...
Read moreThe food proportions are large, There is patio seating, That is the end of the Positive. Service was typical, they were doing their job. The food is not very tasty at all. It lacked any distinctive flavor or spicing which you would normally associate with Greek food. If you did not know what you are eating you would certainly not know it was Greek.. It was bland. My wife had the Pastitiso, and I had the combo plate with lamb. My first taste caused me to ask – is this lamb? It had none of the distinctive lamb flavor and certainly had not been marinated. My wife's dish was almost tasteless, she did not finish it and I tasted of it and agreed wholeheartedly. It likewise needed spices. We asked the waitress about it and she agreed. Any online cookbook would have given a whole different spice recipe – the Chef really Needs...
