I saw 2 lamps and sent a small picture of the glass portion to my mother and she loved them and wanted them for bedside table lamps. She decided they were a bit too expensive for her so she would have to think about it, so my siblings and I decided to surprise her. I went last Thursday, super excited and purchased the 2 lamps. One of the owners, a man, listened as I explained they were a gift for my mom that my siblings were purchasing and I was sending them MI. He didn’t really engage in a conversation with me but I was too excited about the lamps to care. Imagine my dismay when I got home and brought the lamps into my room and realized how big they seemed. I nonchalantly gave the measurements to my mom, I didn’t tell her I had already bought them, she was disappointed as said they would be way too big. I called Saturday to let them know I would have to return the lamps Monday, I couldn’t load them back in my car quickly because of the size, and the woman told me they have an EXCHANGE ONLY policy for 14 days. I said “what?” She repeated it and I hung up and went to go talk with her. The woman who answered is the co-owner and when I explained the situation and told her I spoke with the other owner, her husband and explained they were a gift and would be shipped to MI, he said absolutely nothing about exchange only. She looked at me amused and stated, “Why would we tell our customers about our return policy? We as owners can’t put that onto them. We are not mind readers with what a customer is doing.” I calmly said, “Ma’am, there was no mind reading I explicitly told your husband it was a gift being shipped out and he chose to not mention your policy”. Again, “she said why would we tell you, we have it posted everywhere” By everywhere, there is one sign under glass at the counter, which is FULL of decor etc for sale, and a stamp on the back of your receipt you get AFTER you pay. I told her it was upsetting that an owner would not be forthright with the policy being fully aware of the situation. She told me it was my fault for not asking and I was just looking for someone to blame for my mistake. I told her I assumed they had a shorter return timeframe but that I would still be able to return them if they didn’t work. She told me EVERY mom and pop shop on the Island does business this way doing exchange only. This is blatantly false. It was also so upsetting to see how much she seemed to enjoy the situation which is odd as a business owner. I was shaking and sick to my stomach, I now had $468 dollars in 2 lamps as a gift that weren’t going to work. As soon as I left I had to call my mom and tell her the situation crying that I had to ruin a surprise gift but the only option the owner would allow is store credit so I would have had to FaceTime my mom and walk through the store and see if there was other things she wanted. She, along with everyone else who’s heard the story was appalled and told me not to give them the satisfaction of exchanging the lamps and she would just try to make them work. I am 42 yrs old and have lived in Europe, 4 different states here and have NEVER had an issue like this with any business large or locally owned. My family raised me that you treat customers like you would treat family because without them you don’t have a business. My grandmothers return policy for her mom and pop furniture and decor store ALWAYS allowed for returns and she was in business successfully until she was 82 yrs and had to retire. The owners of Pier 22 hold their customers to an extremely high standard, I wonder if they hold themselves to this same standard/principle in that they have NEVER returned a purchase and received their money back. That they have never gotten an item home and thought, no that’s not how I thought it was going to look. In my conversation with the owner I felt it was an intentional omission to not even mention it would be exchange only for 14 days. This type of experience doesn’t really make one want to “Buy Local and Support Our Local...
Read moreLove this store! Have purchase many large furniture items, artwork, and small decor items. They have it all! Patti has been extremely helpful in helping me pick items out that would flow through an open floorplan. It was so helpful to be able to go in and pick items up and have them delivered SAME DAY! Was tired of waiting for other items that were not as nice from a different store. It's not an easy time to get furniture and I could not be more pleased. Patti was also able to order some additional items that I decided I wanted that I had missed out on because they were purchased while I was deciding. Very helpful and my home looks unique since not everything came from a local chain...
