The Folger Shakespeare Library has reopened after a 4 year renovation project. They continued to host theatrical performances at different venues throughout the DC area, but now are back in the original theater. The Folger is located near the Capitol, Library of Congress, and the Supreme Court. The Folger has the largest collection of works by shakespeare as well as other precious books. The gardens are lovely to walk through. They contain plants native to DC and plant types that would have existed during Shakespeare's life. The exhibition space consists of two interactive galleries and a gift shop. On the upper level is the beautiful Great Hall. The Great Hall will become the Crumb and Quill Cafe starting September 2024. The theater and the amazing Reading Room is also on this level. The reading room is primarily used by researchers. But is open to the public. Please see their website for entry requirements. The Folger’s host many programs to include theater, music, poetry, and book club. One week in March is dedicated to celebrating Shakespeare around the world. In April, Shakespeare's birthday is celebrated. It's almost like a block party. There are people dancing in period clothes, fife and drum corp, a queen and her court. Birthday cake is served. I love the new renovations. One thing that surprises me is how interesting Shakespeare is to teens. As I discovered the new spaces, I saw a wide range of people, but noticed many young people enjoying the exhibits. I had forgotten that so many young people enjoy the plays as...
Read moreThe folger theatre is a charming venue in central DC, on Capitol Hill. It is the centerpiece of the Folger Shakespeare Library. It has largely Shakespeare inspired performances but there are other classics too. The theatre is reasonably old so the seats are smallish. It does not seem to be wheel-chair friendly which is probably a reflection of its age. There are two viewing levels; ground and balcony. The views are good from most seats but there are some that are obstructed by pillars. The theatre itself is intimate so even seated upstairs offers good viewing. You can buy drinks and small snacks at intermission in the basement level where the restrooms are and they do take credit cards. Avoid the queue by preordering. During the weekend there is some free on street parking. If not there is a garage a 10 minute walk away. There is no valet parking. I highly recommend...
