I'll preface this review by saying I'm addicted to Top Chef and that Spike was one of my favorite contestants because of his ingenuity and talent as a chef...
I am relatively new to the area and was in the mood for a good burger. I forget that Spike's digs are just "right around the corner" from me and finally tonight, during my quest for a good burger I remembered! I got in the car at 7pm from NoVA and got on 66-E. After sitting in traffic for what felt like 6 hours, I arrived to Capitol Hill and drove past the shining red awning of the burger mecca. I, in fact, drove by the red awning many times while looking for a parking spot; possibly another 6 hours.
As I approached the Eatery, the smell of fresh burgers filled my sinuses. GOODNESS GRACIOUS! It was glorious. I must admit, I was a little bummed that it wasn't more like a sit-down-and-be-served place but I liked the vibe the place gave off. I placed my order (got a Farmhouse Bacon Cheese). I also decided to completely negate my earlier workout at the gym and ordered a milk shake --- Cookies & Cream.
Great choices. The burger was cooked perfect - medium to medium-rare - and the bacon was crispy! The veggies were all fresh and vibrant in color. The fries went down real easy too along with the different seasoned mayo's used as dipping sauce. The shake was to die for and I wish that there was a large-bore straw to expedite the indulgence.
After consuming 45,000 calories I must say that it felt good. I was almost tempted to order another for the 6 hour trek back through traffic.
Bottom line: This is a great --- no, it is a fantastic fast gourmet burger joint. This was worth the trek through traffic, hands down. Only thing you have to remember is that this is not a sit-down eatery it is a grab-an-awesome-burger fast and get back...
Read moreI was disappointed that the quality of flavor in the food didn’t match the atmosphere and service.
•Smokehouse burger and fries were superb. •I tried three different tables and chairs, each as sticky as a fly trap. •My service was where the issue really began. Upon walking in, my group and I were told to use paper menus which aren’t updated completely as they don’t list the accurate options of shakes available at that time. Upon reaching the register, I attempt to order a Key Lime Pie Shake and continue with my transaction. I was handed a pager that I didn’t realize at the time was dead. I began to question why I hadn’t received my food once my entire group had already picked their orders up from the counter and realized my pager was dead. I went downstairs to check with the staff about ky order when I was handed my correct food, but incorrect shake. It was at this time I informed that the cashier had entered a Milky Way Malt on my ticket which was not what I ordered. I then ask the pick-up staff where my Key Lime Pie Shake was who informed me for the first time that it wasn’t an option and the only options that were available were on the wall behind the checkout line.
This experience deeply saddened me as I was told this was one of the best places to purchase a meal from in the Capitol Hill neighborhood.
My advice to future patrons:
Formal Complaint Regarding Service Experience at Capitol Hill Location
Dear Good Stuff Eatery Management,
I am a frequent customer at your Capitol Hill location, but I recently had a deeply upsetting experience that I feel compelled to bring to your attention.
During my last visit, I ordered a burger and was surprised at how quickly it was prepared—almost immediately after placing the order. While I normally appreciate efficient service, the speed in this case made me question whether the food was freshly prepared, as your brand promises. When I respectfully requested that my burger—and my partner’s—be remade, the employee named Alex responded by issuing a refund in a manner that felt dismissive and disrespectful. He simply placed the money down and walked away without a word.
This interaction left both my partner and me feeling humiliated in front of other customers and staff. We were treated as though our request for properly prepared food was unreasonable. I left the restaurant feeling hurt, disrespected, and unwelcome—experiences no customer should endure.
I am seriously considering pursuing legal action due to the way we were treated, which I believe constitutes both negligence and possible discrimination.
I hope you take this complaint seriously and look into both the food preparation practices and the conduct of your staff. I would appreciate a formal response regarding how this situation will...
