Constructive criticism for the weekly magic draft, I know the owner said they had only done a few drafts so they are new to the space. I’ve been drafting for years so I can give a baseline of what’s supposed to happen.
Prize support for the draft: There was only promo pack prizes with no boosters added to the pool. —Generally, with every entrant there is 1-2 boosters added to the prize support depending on cost of entry. The entry here was I believe $20. Therefore you would expect at least 1 booster pack per person added to the prize pool in addition to any promo packs that may be added to the pool. Then its owners choice to how you distribute those pack. 1 booster pack per win is the most common way, with any extra packs going to the top 3. —Again 1 pack per win is the standard Nationwide.
Length of time a draft takes: Drafts have 3 50 minute matches along with and additional hour to draft your cards and construct your deck. The owner scheduled the draft to start at 7. Therefore it will end at about 11. However the entire time we were playing our matches the owner circled us and kept saying for us to play faster, we are trying to get out of here by 10. If you don’t have a good hand then just concede. —I cannot stress enough that this is not ok. Leave your players to play their matches in peace, with maybe a single callout at the midpoint in the match. We payed money to be here and spend our time having fun playing magic. Not to have someone circle us, try to rush our decisions, and recommending concenssions multiple times. If you want to the draft to end earlier, then it needs to be scheduled earlier.
Drafting of the cards: They did a tournament style draft where everyone stops and waits for everyone to be done before passing the cards. In addition we were also instructed not to look at the cards we had already taken until in between packs. If you want the draft to run faster and be more fun, you don’t need to micromanage this aspect of the draft in casual setting, especially when we are litterally playing for no prize packs and only promo packs… The solution here: When a player is done picking their card, pass the pack. Then players that have picked can immediately pick up the next pack when it is passed and there is no wasted time. If the player next in rotation already has pack in front of them. Wait to pass the next pack until they pick up that pack— this is also the Nationwide standard in a casual draft. You can litterally just give the packs to players , give a rundown of the rules at the start and leave the players to draft. No extra work required until the start of the first round.
I hope that you can get the kinks worked out with the draft. I will try again in the future because everyone there was very nice and a pleasure to play with and I love the...
Read moreMy husband and I recently ventured to Katmandu Games in Waynesville, NC, for our first Friday MTG Draft, and I'm happy to share that it was an incredibly positive experience! The atmosphere of the store is engaging and friendly.
The community of players at Katmandu Games deserves a special mention. Everyone was so friendly and inclusive, offering tips and sharing laughs throughout the evening. It's not always easy to step into a new group, especially in competitive settings, but we had fun and left with some cool cards.
Our first Friday MTG Draft at Katmandu Games was an outstanding experience. The combination of a warm, welcoming atmosphere, friendly community, and knowledgeable staff made for a perfect introduction to the local gaming scene. We're already looking forward to our next visit and would highly recommend Katmandu Games to anyone looking for a great gaming experience in...
Read moreI've made the hour+ drive twice to visit the shop, play some games, hang out, and both times, spent money to buy product.
Recently, after an established history of allowing members of his Discord server to buy/sell/trade privately (an acceptable practice by many shops), I was told that I was posting too much, and the rules were being changed so that only "regular customers, that play games at least once a week" were allowed to make such posts. Shortly thereafter, a statement was made, by the owner, for regular customers to pardon the disruption as the haters were weeded out, and that anyone who hates disabled veterans should kick themselves out.
As a fellow disabled veteran, I find such weaponization to be insulting and disrespectful. A simple statement that he didn't want folks performing private sales and trades would have been more than reasonable, but this was a...
