The library website says that the original statue of Norborne Berkeley, Baron de Botetourt, Governor-General of Virginia, is on display inside the Swem Library and has been since 1966. We were in Williamsburg for a week on vacation and had already seen the 1993 replica Lord Botetourt statue in front of the Wren building. So we drove to the Swem Library to see the original statue. Where do you park to get to the library? Parking in the back is all for staff. We circled the block a few times and couldn't find a parking lot looked public. Campus police had a heavy presence and I didn't want to get a parking ticket, so we gave up. This had me wondering... does the original reconstructed Lord Botetourt statue from 1773 even exist? The college has a YouTube video tour of the Botetourt gallery, but the statue is suspiciously absent. I can only find one photo (attached) of the original statue. All other photos and videos are of the 1993 replica statue in front of the Wren building. Vacation is over and I'm back home now, writing this review. We needed to do some genealogy research of Virginia Ancestors and the combination of their Virginia stacks, Special Collections and William & Mary document index got us most of what we needed. Librarians were very helpful in pointing us in the right direction. WIFI is free for 24-hours, but the staff can extend that to meet your needs.
