One of the best restaurants I've eaten at in Argentina. This is the classic "Don't judge a book by its cover." because the food is simply amazing. We were really pleasantly surprised by the taste and quality of the food.
The restaurant has a very particular look and style to it which is very interesting but might give the impression that it's a place to get simple and oke food. Nothing could be further from the truth... There is a reason why it was packed the whole night and people were waiting in line to get a table!
The food was simply incredible. We ordered the 'Abadejo al Romesco' (Haddock with Romesco' sauce and creamy rice), the 'Cazuelo de Cordero' (Lamb casserole with Malbec mushrooms and Spanish potatoes) and a side of fries. The food was so good we inhaled it all in record time. The fries were crispy and salty, the fish was perfectly cooked, the creamy rice and sauce were refreshing and felt light and don't get me started on the lamb... Wow. Easily the best lamb stew I've had in my life. Each bite got me craving for more, the Spanish crispy potatoes hit exactly the right spot, combined with the flavour of the stew...insanely good. The portions are plentiful as well so be mindful of that (see pics).
The staff was very quick and professional, understood English, and were very nice and helpful. The view was amazing! The staff will direct you to the tables that look out on the mountains which is very thoughtful. The facilities are very clean and well kept.
This is a must visit during your stay in Ushuaia. I expect a lot when visiting a restaurant and having these reviews in mind but I have to give my compliments to Del Viejo Lobo for completely obliterating my expectations and blowing me away with their experience....
Read moreI used to think theme restaurants and those with this type of statues and historical imagery pretty much chose photo-op over good food or decent prices. Viejo Lobo really surprised me.
First, restaurant hours in much of Argentina are tricky; eat before 3 or wait until 8 or 9pm. This place was open at 6pm. They seated us quickly and the beverages and food were brought far quicker than I expected. We have two young kids and their food came out first, which was perfect, because they tend to eat slowly. Our food wasn't much later, and it was good, quite good. Fresh fruit juices are an option, kiddos got banana and lemonade, hubby got strawberry. My chicken was tender and juicy (sorry, I ate some before I remembered to take a picture) and the pumpkin soup was amazing, rich and hearty with incredible flavor. Price wise I was again surprised. A family of four, with three beverages, four meals, and three desserts was around $50 U.S.
Downstairs is a huge gift shop with lots of items referring to the penal colony that used to be here in Ushuaia. We looked around then were encouraged to see and take pictures in the back patio, which is set up with more manequins and scenes from the penal colony, an ice/penguin area and more. Lots of great scenes to take photos (this is just a sample) and the employees are so kind and...
Read moreRead all the great reviews so I decided to give the place a try. Big mistake and waste of my money. One of my waiters, a man in glasses, made the experience miserable. Upon arrival, he ordered me to change my seat with no explanation. OK fine. At every other table he was the life of the party, laughing and joking in Spanish. But with me service was terrible. Maybe he did not like Americans, people who speak english or black people. Cant say for sure. Whatever the case was, he completely ignored me the entire time. Another waiter ultimately took my order. The seafood platter I ordered was not hot but the bread was good. When I asked for a to-go container, the grumpy waiter brought one over, not enough to fit all my leftovers so i left half of my food there. At this point he walks away not bringing the check. So I sit there just waiting and waiting. Finally I was able to flag him for the check and first thing he says is do you want to add tip. Ughhh. Once I paid, he simply walked away. No thank you, no acknowledgement of anything. 0/10 service....
