Rather disappointed. Considering the good reviews we were really looking forward to try this restaurant but apparently there is some inconsistency in the service. Maybe we came at a bad day yet we shouldn't have to feel uncomfortable about it. We have been told of for a start that because we were booked for 12:30 and came only at 13:30 we had only 20 mn to order, that was a good start, we actually did book for 13:30 and came on time plus 20 mn to pass an order is more than enough... We opted for the steak frite and the duck, the steak was rather chewy and couldn't decide whether it was tasty since it was overpowered by the onion sauce, which to our experience isn't present in a traditional steak frite, it is usually served with a medallion of herb butter so you can enjoyed the taste of the steak and maybe a blob of mustard. The frites felt as if they were frozen chips... The duck on the other hand was very nice even if the salad was very basic with such a light drizzle of dressing that I barely tasted it. The wine was very nice too. While the portions of the meat was on the small size it's ok because first that's a portion that would allow you to enjoy a 3 course meal without feeling overloaded. As for the service rather minimalist, even though we ticked the case "first time coming" they didn't make us feel welcome, while the waitresse try to relaxed and smile the other lady whom seems to be the owner didn't bother cracking a smile at all as for the chef he took care to keep his back to the customer as if afraid to have to confront any complain. Never we've been asked whether we were satisfied with the meal nor whether we wanted a dessert or a coffee which we had to go and order at the counter and which wasn't nice at all, far too bitter. I was really looking forward to get an "isle flotante" but have been told that because they had pastries this dessert wasn't available for lunch... what ever, pretty average I thought. Maybe they couldn't wait to wrap it up, I can understand that yet if you don't want to serve late lunch then don't bother accepting them. Back in France we had the golden rule that you first learn in any retail or hospitality jobs that stipulate that "the customer is king" while we are not expecting to get the red carpet treatment we certainly didn't deserve the cold shoulder's one. Not impressed we certainly wouldn't go out of our way to come back. A shame we would have been happy to advise our guests to visit the place. Relax people, you might not enjoy your job, maybe it's not the right one for you yet you might want to hook a smile on your face it makes things...
Read moreWhat a happy discovery! While on a walk, my friend and I decided to just “pop in and see the menu - we ended up staying for the degustation. Our total bill was $121 for two of us after we added some wine and paid a little extra for some dishes. I thought this was a very good price for such a lovely meal.
Entree - French onion soup - we both thoroughly enjoyed the rich flavour. I love French Onion soup at the best of times and thought this was a great example.
Mains - Chicken / scotch fillet - again, very flavoursome. So good I wanted to lick the bowl from the chicken!. My friend’s steak was cooked just the way she liked it and both our meals were devoured. To me, it was exactly why I love French food … the beautiful sauces and deep flavours are so satisfying.
Dessert - Crème brûlée / crepe Suzette - just divine! Both desserts were a delight.
Service - The service was excellent - friendly, efficient, not in your face but pleasantly present.
Venue - lovely high ceilings , clean and comfortable. Candlelight and plenty of space between tables.
We both thoroughly enjoyed our evening meal on our first night in Adelaide. I should note - we weren’t even hugely hungry when we went in, despite this, we enjoyed the food so much, we ate it all anyway!
We wanted to thank the chef personally on the way out - he was a very humble man who sure knows how to cook! He praised the head chef for teaching him.
I would highly recommend this restaurant! It’s also open for breakfast and lunch.. so we...
Read moreValentines Day dinner, thought that it may have been a little more special. My partner sat down in her beautiful white dress, only to have it stained by the table that wasn’t wiped down properly. So that set the mood for the rest of the evening.
Waiter came to take our order about 15 minutes after being seated without water on the table. Asked him to replace the napkin that was used to wipe our table, he took it away but never came back, so I had to ask again.
Another 15 minutes went by before our cocktails arrived, which were average. Espresso martini was flat. French martini didn’t excite either.
The tables were really close to each other, so don’t expect a romantic ambience. Might as well have a conversation with strangers. With the large and loud room and live music, this was very much more of a casual setting. So keep it in mind for those wanting to book something romantic!
Mains were great tho the main serving of baked Camembert is a little strange. We shared our mains anyway.
Our drinks were empty half way through the mains, but no staff noticed to check if we wanted another, let alone checked to see how our meal was going. Staff came to take our plates a while later and asked if we wanted dessert. At that time, the night was done and my efforts for a nice Valentines Day dinner seemed at vein as soon as...
