I recently had the misfortune of dining at Provenance, and to put it mildly, it was an utter disappointment from start to finish. I feel compelled to share my experience so that others can avoid this establishment at all costs. Let's start with the service, or lack thereof. The waitstaff at Provenance were not only lousy but also remarkably rude and obnoxious. Their indifference towards customers was evident throughout the evening, as if they couldn't care less about providing even the most basic level of service. It's disheartening when you have to practically beg for attention, or even a simple smile. Moreover, the complete absence of atmosphere in the restaurant was jarring. The ambiance felt cold and sterile, lacking any character or charm. There was no effort made to create a welcoming environment that would enhance the dining experience. Speaking of the food, it was anything but impressive. The dishes were plain and boring, with no creativity or attention to detail. Each bite left me longing for flavor and excitement, but alas, I was met with disappointment at every turn. For the exorbitant price we were charged, I expected a culinary adventure that would leave me speechless. Instead, I found myself in complete shock at the audacity of charging over $1000 for a meal that failed to deliver anything remotely remarkable. In fact, not a single dish managed to wow me. It felt like the chefs had given up on creating something extraordinary and settled for mediocrity. It was evident that they lacked passion and expertise in their craft. I couldn't help but feel like I had been cheated out of a memorable dining experience, leaving me with nothing but regret and a considerably lighter wallet. Given the astronomical price tag and the underwhelming quality of both the food and service, I can confidently say that I will never set foot in Provenance again. Furthermore, I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this restaurant to anyone. There are countless other establishments that offer exceptional cuisine and a genuinely enjoyable dining experience at a fraction of the cost. To sum it up, dining at Provenance was an absolute waste of money. The lousy service, rude waitstaff, lack of atmosphere, and plain, uninspiring food left me feeling cheated and deeply unsatisfied. Save yourself the disappointment and explore other dining options that are worthy of your hard-earned money.

One of the best meals we’ve had anywhere. While the name sounds French, the menu leans more towards Japan, with a $150 set menu of 4 courses, each containing multiple small dishes. With 18 items to taste, some are better than others, but there are enough original, standout flavours here to make this a meal you will long remember. A single oyster was sublime, mushroom tofu is something I’d never choose but it was a taste sensation, the braised daikon and braised and grilled octopus with nori jam wonderful and the clam dashi was awesome. I won’t describe every dish here, but the standard of the food, the service and the wine choices never failed. It’s worth making a special trip to Beechworth just to dine here, but get in quick as they only open Friday to Monday. There’s pricey accommodation on site if you don’t want to move too far, but the restaurant is right in the centre of town and easy walking distance from most other accommodation if you want to save the pennies to splurge on the meal.

I was delighted to be in Beechworth for work and finally get the opportunity to dine at Provenance. The restaurant is situated in a beautiful old building. Chef Michael Ryan's menu did not disappoint, it was a thoughtfully constructed menu of small dishes that came out as 4 sets, both he and the other lovely waitstaff talked you through each dish as they arrived at the table. The absolute stand outs for me were the aged king fish sashimi, the light crunchy mushroom tofu with katsuobushi salt, the tomato with shio kombu & herbs, seriously I loved this so much, same with the exceptional venison tataki and the Japanese potato salad. The care taken with the vegetable dishes makes me want to return and try the vegetarian menu. I don't really have a sweet tooth and the roasted fig with salted milk sorbet was perfect. I can also recommend to house martini made with their own house made yuzu bitters. I ended the meal with a house made Amaro, which was perfect.

Had a lot of promise, given the beautiful environment and architecture, and the combination of Japanese inspired cuisine was certainly something to look forward to. Holding two chefs hats from Good Food Guide as well, had promised to be an experience to remember. Unfortunately, disappointed overall. A lot of promise, but no follow through. Felt very rushed throughout with no one asking how we were enjoying the meal or any feedback. Cutlery not changed between courses and the table not freshened up between courses as well. Presentation for each of four courses was on a wooden tray akin to a Japanese takeaway. The food itself I would compliment the chef for but we could not appreciate the journey that would obviously have been part of the chef’s intention in designing the inspired palette. None of that experience was presented alongside the meal. Love the location, but just wish it had lived up to what I had hoped especially given the pricing competes with some particularly good alternate restaurants, both locally and in...

Came here the other night and was really looking forward to the meal. The food did not disappoint ( they catered to dietary requirements which was really great). The service was not good at all. Examples included- Having to ask the waiter for service repeatedly, wine glasses being taken away without asking if I wanted another glass (I did!!), waiting for 15 minutes to pay (asked three times). No one asked how the meal was or whether we wanted tea or coffee. Normally this won't be an issue, but I could see the service was better for other tables ( same waiter was friendly and chatty). As the only non- Caucasians in the room, could only guess race was the reason. This was strange as the restaurant is Japanese inspired. I know restaurants are struggling with finding good staff at the moment but that should not be an excuse for rude unwelcome behavior. Tldr- food is great, but the service is substandard Don't come here if you are not Caucasian as you will be treated as second class citizens (& basically not receive...
