This is a super cool and friendly café, a short, easy walk of about 15 mins, from the New Farm Ferry terminal. It’s an ideal place for breakfast, lunch or brunch or whatever takes your fancy, if you tie it in with a ferry ride.
There is both indoor and outdoor seating, but being a warm and balmy autumn morning, we decided to sit outdoors at a comfy little table. The whole place, inside and out, is decorated in a light, bright and breezy style, with white and wooden Ikea style furniture, strong lighting and overhead fans. Ideal for a warm day.
The ambience was laid back, chilled and relaxed and even though it was a weekday afternoon, there were still a few people around, to give it a nice, fun vibe.
There was only one waitress on duty and her name was Sarah, according to my docket. It took awhile to attract her attention to come and take our order, but once that was achieved, everything ran smoothly and the drinks and food came out quickly. I think there’s also an option for app ordering, but for such a small place it seemed unnecessary.
The menu is fairly limited and especially if you’re allergic to eggs, there isn’t much of a choice of non-egg meals, so the three of us all chose the same: the avocado on toast. But we were happy with our choice: the avo was tasty and smooth, topped with fresh, creamy ricotta, sliced cherry tomatoes and sprigs of greenery. To accompany that, a few coffees and an iced matcha latte.
The only thing that I didn’t like about Joedy’s were the prices. Now I fully understand that we’re currently experiencing a Weimar Republic-like hyperinflationary crisis, and that’s no fault of business. If we want to apportion blame for this disaster, look no further than our own govt and the Reserve Bank, so of course, I appreciate that restaurants and cafes are all under cost pressure, but still, I think it’s a bit over the top to charge 20 for a simple avocado on toast and 5 for a coffee, which means that three avocado toasts and three coffees will set you back 75 pesos. Welcome to Australia 2023. And delicious as they were, these were modest serving sizes. Luckily for us, we had the Entertainment discount, which lopped a few pesetas off our bill and brought it back to a more reasonable 57.
Joedys is located in a little restaurant precinct just behind the N.F. park. It’s a top spot for a relaxing brunch on a Fri afternoon, so full marks to Joedy and his team for creating such a pleasant ambience, serving decent food and drink and being so polite, friendly and efficient. I’d like to see some movement on prices though, preferably in a downwards direction, before I make a ret trip.
To access the toilets, you need a code, go through a door into a narrow corridor where you’ll find a single unisex toilet. It had soap but no hand...
Read moreFirst time dining at Joedy’s and we really enjoyed our visit.
On arrival, a very friendly and welcoming staff member greeted us and showed us the way to our reserved table. Once seated, we grabbed a large skinny cap and one soy flat white in a cup. I thought my skinny cap was delicious. The milk was frothed on point and the quality of their coffee beans was evidently great.
Food wise, I grabbed their Eggs Benny and my partner had their XO Scramble. Starting with my dish, I thought the egg Benny was brilliant and well executed. The cornbread waffle was crispy and crunchy on the edge and the texture remained till the last bite. Flavor wise, the waffle offered a hint of sweetness, which I really appreciated. The fact that they used cornbread instead of wheat flour really elevated the whole dish. The fried chicken sitting on top was crispy on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside. I thought the bacon jam was a really touch and really complimented the fried chicken. I especially loved the hot hollandaise sauce, which stunned me on the first taste and really grew on me the more I ate. It was definitely the highlight of the dish for me. The leaves and kale chips were a nice addition and gave a bit of freshness. The XO Scramble came in a fairly big portion and looked rather appetizing. I had a bit of everything and I especially loved the scrambled eggs. They were tender and had this distinctive herbal taste, which was surprisingly yum and went perfectly well with the eggs. However, we both thought the dishes could have used a bit more salt, which would have been more flavorful.
The service throughout our stay was very smooth and pleasant. All staff were very attentive and approachable. Everyone was friendly and polite upon interactions. Both the coffees and food were served in a timely fashion, despite the amount of customers they had then. In general, it was a very enjoyable experience and we hope to...
Read moreJoedy's is a well-positioned cafe just down from the corner of Sydney and Brunswick streets opposite New Farm park. I didn't take photos today which means I must come back around😊. Pleasant staff that look at you when they speak to you was what attracted me back to this place after my first visit.
Previously I visited for lunch late last year, and I remember it was delicious. It had something to do with some delicious corn fritters, and great coffee.
This morning I sampled the omelette of the day, served frittata style rather than classic french. It contained asparagus, perfectly cooked tips, ( fresh) proscuitto, and ( a little) caramelized onion. It was a generous size and served with a roquette salad.
I enjoyed a long macchiato which was dark, strong and served with sparkling water. There was a perfect amount of foam so there was a slight soothe, without milkiness. The classic pear juice had natural sweetness without additives( thank you!)
This cafe is a light- filled space that strikes the right balance between comfort and ulitarianism. You can hear yourself think here; the coffee machine is a background hum, and the music is loud enough that you can tune in if you're enjoying it but it's not irritating otherwise.
Pricing is the kind that keeps them in business( and hey I want that) but doesn't gogue you.
Great work!...
