Start with positive, move the negatives, end with an ironically lengthy tl;dr summary.
Part A: Positive Honestly, the staff are pretty good, meals are cheap and offer good value, the venue and its facilities are quite nice and the place is clean with a lot of open space. The patrons ruin it for me, but maybe it's different for you. Maybe (it is) this is just one opinion from one random on the internet who may be the total opposite of you. My name is Jalapenos and these are my thoughts. You'll find additional positive aspects in the tl;dr at the end of my post, which is actually way too long for a tl;dr so be warned. This post in lengthy.
Part B: Negatives Check the salad for bugs and the pub for grubs. If you like that, or you're the type that's big into gambling on the relative prowess of various 4-legged creatures, let the algorithms do their thing in the typical pokie room setting, where everyone always knows the exact amounts won over the past 3-4 decades (typically when they first started smoking Winfield Reds before more recent tobacco tariffs forced them to smoke Horizon 20s, brandless black market Rollie grown at the friendly crackhouse on the corner a few blocks away from the Shafston, or to become an entrepreneurial service provider to lonely strangers at night - a magician, if you will, capable of turning a trick into $50 cigs). More interesting than such a wonderous display of eidetic memory, is the juxtaposed inability of these individuals to use this remarkable skill to recall any metrics related to other events, including: (1) how many horrendous, albeit affordable (cheap) beers they've consumed prior to playing pokies, positioned perfectly in picturesque place packed with positivity, politeness and... Proposterous percentages per patron in personal winnings; and (2) the unexpected near-zero correlation between eidetic memory and various proxy measures of intelligence, e.g. reading comprehension, any displayed grasp of their first language and its appropriate usage, use of social skills, show of empathy, capability for adaptation of behaviours in alignment with the different scenarios/environmental conditions; and (3) similar to the above, a consistent deficiency in memory of certain events, and notably, a complete inability to recall or approximate their losses, whether total, monthly, weekly, daily, hourly or even 30-minute increments).
Part C: Ironically lengthy summary (tl;dr fail) tl;dr - patronage and staff not a problem, the types of patrons and class of beer available are in near-perfect alignment: precisely what draws the regulars. While this clearly is good business and preumably by-design, Shafston is a preferred place for some, unpleasant for others. Convenience helps to attract locals, as does the "Open til 4am" guarantee and the late midnight closure time for the bottleshop located just behind the venue, closer to the large, modern looking dining area within the pub (next to the smoking area) just a couple of metres from the back entrance and across...
Read moreShafston Hotel, where to begin? I hosted trivia at Shafston Hotel, for slightly over a year. I would rate the food as a four (pubwise). Could be a five, but on merit whenever the venue brings a new meal in (they have done and the chef is decent) that the customers enjoy, ‘nobody seems to take any notice of feedback.’ Steak is good there and the chef can cook a decent one for sure. Bit overpriced. Service, I think ideally - I wouldn’t - rate as, efficient. Sometimes this place is so bare, it wouldn’t be worth even reviewing. Other, times like on a thriving trivia evening - plates would be left till the end of the night on tables. I’ve had dinner in their over ten times, been asked how my meal was, maybe once or twice. It would be a nice touch, to show elements of appreciation. Organisations that do, the impression remains. Lastly, the venue set out. I would rate this, as good, It’s a big venue, lots of room, smokers section is fun, albeit a little small. Shafston Hotel, located in Kangaroo Point, I give a rating of three, which is good, in reflection of the suburb. However, we should all try to remain on the improve, Shafston has the - opportunity to bring people back, but seems unwilling. Cheers.
Bottle O Wednesday 09th August: Had an unfortunate incident with the boy who has long hair in the bottle o - he accused me on Friday the 10th of not paying for a bottle of Prosecco and a bottle of Jacobs Creek Red on 08th of August. I have confirmation in my commonwealth bank that I did pay. I then gave him the money on the Friday. Which means I spent 60 on a 31 dollar invoice. It’s ok, no hard feelings but overall...
Read moreOn the 1st of July 2023, I celebrated my 50TH year anniversary as a Hairstylist. As I live about 300 metres from the Shafston Hotel, I decided to have a meeting with Keron, who is the executive manager at the Shafston Hotel. From the second I sat down with him, to discuss what I had in mind, the amount of guests, sit down dinner, decorating, band, lighting, I was put at ease straight away. Keron, understood straight away, the importance of my function and the atmosphere I wanted to create. Well 200 guests filled the downstairs main bar area, the grazing tables for the self serve entrees, the grazing platters for the main course, and again grazing tables for the self serve scrumptious desserts, cheese and fresh fruits looked absolutely magnificent. Service was efficient, extremely friendly and accommodating, nothing was too much or a bother. Every and I mean every guests left the party, feeling that they had one amazing night out. A week later and friends are still talking about it with such enthusiasm and excitement. Keron, I could not have even imagined how amazing the night turned out, I am a very hard person to please because I look for excellence and professionalism when it comes to entertaining my clients, friends and family, you and your staff truly excelled in every area of customer service and the high standard of which the food was presented and delivered. There was just nothing to fault. 10 out of 10. Thank you for partnering me in this very important milestone in my life, I am very grateful to you
