The L.A. delivers outstanding value for money both for meals and drinks.
My wife and I dined on a quiet Wed night in mid-Apr. Unbeknown to us, Wed night is “Steak Night”. And what a nice surprise that was! For only 19 pesos you can get a 250g rump with sauce, chips and salad. It didn't take much convincing for us to choose that option. We added a side serve of coleslaw for only 6 pesos, so for 45, we got two steaks with all the trimmings and a coleslaw. And it’s not as if these guys stint on either quality or quantity when they hand out these specials. These were fab steaks, beautifully prepared with love, care and attention to detail. They were well done just the way we like them, and full of taste and flavour, with a spicy pepper sauce for me and a smooth mushroom sauce for my wife. The chips that accompanied the steaks were golden brown and crispy, and the little salads were nutritious and wholesome. The creamy coleslaw rounded off two perfect meals. Serving sizes were generous, and I liked the neat presentation on stylish yellow crockery. We couldn’t have been happier.
There were decent drinks deals too. My fav Gage Road Single Fin ale was on special for just 7 a pint, so one of those and a cold drink for my wife cost only 10. Put all that together and for 55 pesos we got two high quality meals and two drinks. You just couldn’t beat that for value for money these days, especially in this era of Weimar Republic-like hyperinflation that we’re enduring, thanks to our government's profligacy and the disastrous decisions of the Reserve Bank.
But it’s not just in the food and drink department that these guys excel. We enjoyed everything about our evening, from the fast friendly and polite service to a cool, laid back and relaxed vibe. When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by the manager, who immediately made us feel welcome. It was fairly empty so we chose a table in the middle of the main dining area. It was a large and comfy wooden table with wooden chairs. Floors are timber, and with strong lighting and white walls, it has a modern look and feel about it. You will also notice how spotlessly clean and well maintained the place is.
What I also like about it, is that there’s no confusing, or time consuming app ordering. You just go up to the bar and place your order. Nice and simple. And within less than 15 minutes the meals were on the table, all done with a professional demeanour and a nice smile.
Only thing missing was a few more patrons. At one point we were the only guests, although later a large group of rather lively senior citizens arrived, and that did brighten things up a bit. A few groups of young people drifted in and out, most I suspect coming for drinks only. There’s a pleasant but smallish outdoor area where one could sit, and it has views of Caxton Street down below, but I guess that’s only suitable for summer. Being a chilly autumn eve we preferred to sit indoors.
Toilets are also clean, well provisioned and easy to find at the back of the bar area, with ample male and female cubicles.
Parking can be a bit challenging, but there’s a carpark at The Barracks shopping plaza across the road, where you can get two hours free. And you’ll be able to do your shopping afterwards at the well stocked Coles supermarket and the popular BWS liquor store.
I was told by the chatty maître d, that Mon, Tues and Wed are special nights, with Wed night being “Steak Night”.
This place deserves to be better patronised and we’ll certainly be back. Thanks guys for a...
Read moreWe booked a table for dinner 3 weeks in advance under the "Broncos v Cowboys" booking detail they had on their website that fell on good Friday. They took a $100 charge on our cc to endure our attendance and then when we arrived we were given a paper ticket and told to line up for our food that we then paid $30.00 per head for. There was a choice of 4 meals on the menu and it was served in a takeaway tub- no mention of this when we booked! We booked our table for 5.15pm. We then got in the que for the food straight away as other disgruntled customers told us it was an extensive wait- they weren't wrong! We finally got served our food at 6.30pm and instead of the chicken burger or pulled pork burger there were scraps left, no slaw as detailed and no buns either and 7 chips were put in my container and when I queried it -I was told be are running out of chips! The food was diabolical and the service was so slow as a few guys were attempting to serve hundreds of people from under a couple of gazebos and certainly not worth $30 a meal. So the table we booked from 5.15pm we sat at for all of 10 mins whilst we ate our food. We went to buy a drink to have with our dinner served in the polystyrene container only to be told the bar shut at 6.30pm!! So no drink either. You had to book so they had every opportunity to prepare and get enough staff - it was terrible and the girl in charge swore at customers to come and get what ever food was left if they were hungry as she told them " there is f... fish and chips here if your hungry! All in all a terrible experience and we were the "lucky ones" there was still a massive line up for food when we left so for sure those clients would have missed the kick and start of the game they had...
Read moreHey hey. Yet another place to go where the food service and atmosphere us very welcoming. Went here for my sisters 60th birthday. We had. Cornered off area with the outside balcony attached. Was a great space for about 30 - 50 people. My sister put a tab on the bar. Not sure how much but it didn't seem to run out before most of the people left later in the evening Mind you I was drink it by ginger ale so didn't exactly eat into the rabbit very much myself. But she also had platters going round with food. Everything from squid and calamari. Battered eggplant and zucchini. Mini burgers and hot dogs. Grilled prawns and spring rolls. There was ample food on offer and there seemed to be heaps. The staff were all lovely and friendly while bringing the food around. I think there was music playing in the background. Not sure if hotel supplies that or whether my sister organized that, as her husband is a DJ. My sister had a lively cake which the hotel supplied plates and forks for it to be served once it had been cut. Again not sure if that was an additional cost for cakage.
All in all my sister was very happy with the evening as was I. Everything was very nice and wasn't over crowded with other people in the hotel. If you have a function coming up or you just want a night out for dinner with friends give it a go. Parking can be found at the barracks across the road. And the hotel will validate your ticket so you only have to pay 10 dollars when the validate your ticket.
So give it a...
