My wife & I frequently dined at Moda when we lived above the restaurant at its former location at 12 Edward Street, Brisbane CBD, enjoying numerous outstanding and memorable dishes prepared by Chef Javier, as well as warm and friendly service led by Francois and his team.
Due to overseas travel, and then living outside the CBD, it had been at least nine years since we last enjoyed a lunch or dinner at Moda, until January 23, and I'm pleased to say Javier and Francois have taken the restaurant to new heights in their new location at The Barracks, as my wife & I enjoyed one of the most unique dining experiences ever (similar to the Chef's Table at Commander's Palace in New Orleans).
Thanks to Juliette, my wife & I were one of two couples seated at the Kitchen Table, looking straight into the kitchen, watching the team of chefs working so diligently and professionally to “get things right” while being directed and orchestrated by Javier.
It was both amazing and entertaining watching Lenin cooking on the MIBRASA charcoal oven…take a look at some of the photos I’ve attached to this review to see how perfectly cooked the beef was which came out of the MIBRASA.
Both Lenin and Antonio spoke with my wife & me on numerous occasions, as well as with Neil & Kate, the couple who were seated next to us at the Kitchen Table, telling the four of us about some of the many dishes they were preparing while assisting Chef Javier.
The restaurant was packed, with not a vacant table when my wife & I arrived at 7:45PM for our booking. Despite this, the service provided to us by Chris was attentive, professional, and helpful, with Chris recommending a 2012 M&Z ‘Reserva’ Tempranillo Blend, which matched perfectly with the Wagyu Beef Sirloin Marble Score 4 which we ordered as a shared main course.
We were encouraged to take our time perusing the menu, and decided to share three dishes, starting with Zucchini Flowers stuffed with Salmon Mousse, followed by Paellita by Javier, with Queensland Seafood, and then the beef.
Every dish was beautifully presented, cooked to perfection, and most thoroughly enjoyable.
As stated in the title of this review, Moda is “Truly Deserving of Its #18 Rating (January 2021)” (out of 3,337 restaurants in Brisbane).
It certainly won’t be nine years before my wife & I dine again at Moda…we’re going there with friends the weekend of February 26.
Thank you to Chef Javier, Juliette, Chris, Lenin, Antonio, and many of your other team members who helped make for such an enjoyable and memorable dining experience for...
Read moreHad dinner here tonight, family of 6 having a nice meal for grandparents birthday. Pre-ordered the 1.5kg tomahawk steak. We got there before it got busy, couple of tables already seated but pretty quiet. Ordered straight away including some appetisers like marinated olives, which took 30 minutes to show up (didn’t realised they get marinated to order). The Paellita was dry and had a burnt taste but the waiter and owner assured us that’s how it’s made in the South if Spain, can’t say if that’s right or not but they offered to replace it once we had a lecture about that’s how it’s supposed to be! After 40 minutes a query was asked on how long the steak would be and I think the waiter tried to make a joke about it but then doubled down on not knowing causing upset in how he dealt with it, then wouldn’t leave until an apology was accepted. This had now completely ruined the meal but we are all hungry and been there an hour now and the steak finally showed up, if its pre-cooked weight was 1.5kg I am a flying monkey! The 12 year old daughter could have finished it on her own given the chance, at least the chef did a decent job here as it was cooked to the requested rarity and was very enjoyable with good presentation, I would have liked to have the rest of the original 1.5kg weight though. Numerous wait staff check on you constantly, to the point it disrupts your meal they tried to bring other people dishes (wonder who go my olives!) it’s good to be attentive but asking how each dish is was too much. Ok steaks finished and trying to salvage the evening let’s have some deserts, ask for the menu couple times and wait another 10 minutes till the bring a platter over, no menu so no prices but in for a penny in for a pound at this point (hint ask for the prices lol) they were nice at least but most defiantly not value for money.
Overall a shoddy experience with rude, clumsy or staff that don’t seem quite sure what’s going on, food is average, atmosphere is ruined by the sheer number of staff running around, don’t not recommend eating here as a family and will not be going back or recommend...

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Moda Review – Benchmark Wines of Australia Long Lunch Series
As a chef and passionate foodie, nothing makes me happier than supporting our incredible local producers, farmers, and family-owned restaurants. This sold-out Selector Magazine Long Lunch Series at Moda Restaurant at The Barracks was everything I love rolled into one — exceptional food, world-class wine pairings, and meeting truly wonderful people.
On Saturday, I had the absolute pleasure of hosting this very special event for 70 Wine Selectors members and friends. The legendary Paul Diamond, Publisher of Selector Magazine, shared his wealth of wine knowledge in a way that was both entertaining and educational — his masterclasses are an absolute must for anyone who loves wine.
Working alongside Paul was a real honour and an inspiring experience.
The kitchen team, led by Chef Javier Codina, created a stunning menu where every course perfectly complemented the premium Australian wines selected by the expert Wine Selectors tasting panel. A heartfelt thank you to Javier, Francois Le Seveant, and the Moda team for your warm hospitality, seamless service, and food that was simply outstanding.
Highly recommend Moda Restaurant to all food lovers — an absolute gem for anyone who values beautiful food, thoughtful wine pairings, and exceptional service. ❤️
