CHATTERBOX CAFE PROMOTION 12 to 23 March 2025
Let's start with the good: Reception was efficient & quickly found our reservation. We were shown to our table almost instantly.
Waiter offered us water (still, sparkling or tap) almost immediately.
The venue looks nice and had a good ambience.
The let down/bad: *There was no real offer of explanation of the menu or offerings for the evening by the senior waiteress ( who wore glasses) who served us.
When ordering asked our senior waitress if it was possible for the rojack to have the nuts on the side. She did not even bother going to the kitchen to ask and instead just said "nuts are nice". This is very disappointing attitude, not having even gone to the kitchen to ask.
*Rojak ($24) when it was served had the portion size that would at best fit into a small bowl. The taste was ok. Contained about 4 pieces of cut dough sticks, about 6 x 5 cent pieces of apple, around 5 x 20 cent sized pieces of pineapple, 2 x 20 cent pieces lf bang kwang, about 6 x slivers of wax apple. Flavour wise it was good but not the best.
Lobster Laksa ($52) - the presentation was really not good & nowhere close to the picture promoting the dish. The dish was served luke warm. The thick roce noodle was overcooked & a little gluggy. There was a bit of lobster in it for sure but just bits & pieces of it. The taste was ok but we can definitely find better Laksa in Perth. The portion size is very small. The cost of the noodle is really not much & the amount of it was really very small when you consider this bowl costs $52.00
The chicken rice ($34) was served with a bowl of soup. Whilst waiting for our food, we heard the next table complain to the waiter that their chicken rice was cold & the soup was cold too! 5 minutes later, we were served our chicken rice. The rice was not cold but it really was at best very mildly luke warm. The soup was also luke warm. The portion size of the chicken is fine but the rice was probably on the smaller side.
Just to see if there was a difference in taste I ordered an "extra bowl of rice" ($7) and gave specific instructions (in jest) for them to ensure they microved the rice for an extra minute to ensure it was served properly warmed through & hot.
To be fair, this warmed up rice when eaten with the chicken actually tasted much more flavourful.
I did ask our senior waitress if the Guest Chef from Singapore was inside and she said yes.
My conclusion is that if Singapore Chef Liew Tien Heong really was in the kitchen, he should be immediately retired to save his reputation.
Silks as a purported Chinese Restaurant of the high end nature needs a good review as well. Both this guest chef and the chefs at Silks, a Chinese Restaurant served nearly cold rice, served cold soup, served luke warm Laksa. That is as bad as it can get as these are just very basic things.
Am not shying away from paying for a meal but the chefs must at least serve the rice and soup elements hot.
Our table was less than 5 meters from the doors of the kitchen, so it really didnt have far to go to.
Something is definitely wrong in this kitchen after our...
Read moreI recently tried the Signature Lunch at Silks for $69 per person, opting for the premium course with an additional $15 for lobster. The set menu included: • Seafood Fried Rice • Mixed Salad with Salmon in Sesame Dressing • Assorted Chef’s Dim Sum Selection with Garlic Chilli Sauce • Chef’s Choice of Spring Rolls with Chilli Mayonnaise • Premium Course: Wok-Fried Lobster with Organic Tamarind Sauce • Dessert: New-Style Mango Pudding with Condensed Milk Sago & Fresh Exotic Fruit
I’ve had great experiences at Silks before, but unfortunately, this meal fell short.
The seafood fried rice was clumpy, hard, and dry, lacking the signature “wok hei” that makes a good fried rice shine. Each grain should be distinct, but this was a far cry from that standard.
The mixed salad with salmon was misleading—the menu suggested fresh salmon, but it arrived with smoked salmon, which, when paired with the sesame dressing, was overwhelmingly salty and unpleasant.
The dim sum selection had potential—the garlic chilli sauce was beautifully fragrant—but the dumplings themselves were disappointing. The Xiao Long Bao lacked its signature soup filling, the shrimp dumpling and sui mai were small, dry, and under-seasoned.
The chef’s choice spring rolls—a prawn-filled roll and BBQ pork pastry—were better. The chilli mayo was a nice touch that lifted the flavors.
The premium wok-fried lobster was the biggest letdown. The three small pieces were overcooked and tough, making them difficult to enjoy. The tamarind sauce was well-balanced, but it couldn’t save the dish.
Dessert, however, was the highlight. The mango pudding was light, creamy, and refreshing, with exotic fruit (lychee and a mini passionfruit macaron) that complemented the dish perfectly. My partner had a salted caramel macaron, which didn’t quite hit the mark.
Overall, this Signature Lunch was underwhelming, with several missteps in execution. You’re better off ordering from the main menu for a more...
Read moreThis was our first time trying Silks. We have tried Nobu and Bisto Guillaume and experienced a top quality experience. Unfortunately, this lacked that special feel for the price and expectation we had.
The venue is very large and well decorated however we felt rushed, the food was not overly hot and fresh, and the service needed improvement. Tables were slow to be cleared (ours and those who had left around us - tables covered in used utensils for nearly an hour) and this was mid-week dinner where the restaurant was not full. It lacked the silver service feel. We ordered Peking duck pancakes for starter, and the rest mains, and before we had our entree plates cleared and before one of us has finished our entree, the main sharing plates were placed down and our mains arrived. It was not progressive at all. Drinks were staggered (we ordered at once, but one drink didnt come and we had to ask for it) and we never got asked if we wanted anymore drinks through our entire dinner. All mains came at once, nothing was really explained when it arrived. I cant complain how quick the food came, but it just seemed they wanted you to eat and run.
Seems like such a shame for Crown standards. Noodle88 has food just as good for half the price.
The food was nice, but personally did not feel it was worth the price. It lacked the wow factor. Flavours weren't there. The Buddahs Delight vege dish needed garlic or salt, it was very bland. The Toothfish was yummy and well cooked. The crispy skin chicken was dry and had no sauce to compliment it unfortunately. We got beef wide rice noodle stir fry but was no different than our local chinese.
Canton Bay Chinese has much more variety of yummy choices and better service. Food is hot and fresh there. We have frequented many top quality restaurants around Perth and unfortunately this is not one of them.
We won't be back, but will definitely continue to frequent Nobu which has top service and...
