I recently had the chance to check out this new Hong Kong cuisine restaurant that just opened up in Perth. Excited to try some dishes, my friends and I decided to give it a go a couple of days before their promotion period. We ordered a variety of dishes including Kang pao chicken, Kai-lan with oyster sauce, sizzling steak, Singapore stir-fried noodles, and roasted pork & BBQ pork.
To be honest, I was a bit disappointed with the overall experience. While the menu had a wide range of options, I couldn't help but notice the lack of authenticity when it came to local Hong Kong dishes. It seemed like they missed the mark on capturing those familiar flavors.
The Kang pao chicken didn't taste quite right. It had a peculiar flavor that didn't match the classic taste I was expecting. Similarly, the Kai-lan with oyster sauce didn't hit the mark either. The vegetable lacked of flavors, and the oyster sauce was disappointingly watery.
The sizzling steak was okay in terms of the meat quality, but the butter flavor was a bit underwhelming. And to make matters worse, they served it with Hainan chicken fried rice, which felt like an odd combination. I think separating them would have made for a better dining experience.
The Singapore stir-fried noodles were decent, but they didn't stand out as anything exceptional. They tasted pretty average, lacking the complexity and distinct flavors I usually associate with this popular Singaporean dish.
And the roasted pork and BBQ pork. This was the biggest letdown for me. The roasted pork didn't have that crispy skin I was eagerly anticipating. And the BBQ pork was way too sweet, with an overwhelming honey flavor that overpowered everything else.
On the bright side, the service was prompt, and the food arrived relatively fast, within 8-10 minutes, which is acceptable for a quick meal. However, the drink I ordered, Milo, didn't live up to its appealing photo. the taste fell short of expectations, and I was left quite disappointed.
All in all, my visit to this new Hong Kong cuisine restaurant had its ups and downs. While the menu offered a wide variety of dishes, the authenticity and flavors were lacking. I hope the restaurant takes these feedback points into consideration. With some adjustments to the flavor profiles and attention to details like crispy pork skin, they can elevate their dishes and create a more authentic and satisfying dining experience

Review: The food was really good. Fried Rice had good flavour and "wok hei" to it. If anything, I didn't like the roast pork that was in it because it was now dry and chewy. But I think it's supposed to be expected. I'd expect otherwise if it was "Crispy Pork Fried Rice", which is also on their menu. Beef Brisket Noodle was good too. There was a good amount of beef brisket pieces, and they were cooked well, not tough and chewy. I also jokingly told my wife the soup was not MSG but OMG... she rolled her eyes. But it was good soup. The french toast was an interesting take. For those who have eaten HK Style French Toast, I believe normally, the peanut butter is spread inside the bread before it is deep fried. This one was not the case, rather than put peanut butter between the pieces, they just stacked the bread, deep fried it, then drenched the entire plate in a nice, gooey peanut butter. It was just as tasty and there was lots of peanut butter left over. Check out the photos for reference.
Atmosphere was clean and nice. One of the walls was redone with the HK Styled neon light signs. Kinda gave the feel you were in the streets of Hong Kong I guess.
Not much to service as most of it was self serve. You order on a sheet of paper, writing down the menu codes and quantity. Take it to the front counter, pay and they will serve you. One thing we did find strange was that they don't do single serve hot drinks (Milk Tea, Milk Coffee, Honey Lemon, etc). Looking at their drinks counter, we realise that they don't prepare drinks cup by cup, but rather by jugs, hence the missing hot drinks. But that's just what we observed.
The only caveat to this review is that we were there on a weekday morning. The real test is probably how the food quality would fare on an extremely busy weekend. We're not fans of huge crowds and long lines so we'll let you be the reviewers of that!
P.S We also saw that they served Dim Sum. The table next to us was already there and by the time our food was out - approximately 15 minutes later - their Dim Sum order was still not out, maybe another 5 minutes after our food had arrived. Feels a bit long, but on the upside, it means it's all...
Read moreI was first introduced to Hong Kong Taste by my sister-in-law and quickly fell in love with this restaurant. While I haven’t tried everything on the menu, I can say their food is packed with strong, satisfying flavors. One of my favorites is the combination omelette rice—it’s rich and delicious. If you’re not a fan of oily food, I recommend asking for less oil, but even with a bit of oiliness, the flavor is superb. The slight greasiness enhances the aroma and taste, bringing the dish to another level.
What truly stands out to me is their 紅豆冰 (red bean milk). I’m usually quite skeptical of this drink as I’ve found it to be dull and watery at other places. However, at Hong Kong Taste, it’s thick, creamy, and has a rich texture that I love. The red beans are soft and perfectly cooked, making it a must-try for anyone who enjoys this drink. The quality of the drinks here is a step above others I've tried, which keeps me coming back. Unfortunately, for those using delivery apps like DoorDash, 紅豆冰 is not available for delivery. It’s only offered in-store. I'm not sure about other food apps, but for those who love this drink, it's worth visiting the restaurant in person.
Their service is also exceptional. The staff are always friendly, considerate, and genuinely care about their customers. One memorable experience was when I ordered through DoorDash and included a note requesting that they make sure to season the Singapore fried mee hoon. The last time I had a takeaway from their shop, I noticed that the noodles had no taste, likely because they forgot the seasoning. I mentioned this in the DoorDash instructions as a reminder. When I received my order this time, everything was perfect—more than perfect. They even included a small note apologizing for the last order and explaining that the complimentary dish they provided was to make up for it. This thoughtful gesture and handwritten note showed just how sweet and attentive they are, and this act of generosity and kindness reflects their strong moral values and dedication to customer satisfaction. They prioritize quality in both their food and service, which is rare to find.
Overall, Hong Kong Taste has consistently delivered great food and service, making it a place I highly recommend. I hope they continue to thrive and grow even...
