If you’re in Canberra and looking for authentic Malaysian flavours with perfectly executed dumplings, Makanan Dumpling House in Acton is a must-visit. From the moment you step in, the aroma of freshly cooked dishes instantly sets the tone. Their deep fried wontons are crispy and golden, while the steamed chicken dumplings are soft, juicy, and bursting with flavour. The chicken & prawn dumplings are a perfect balance of textures and taste.
The mains are equally impressive. The Pad See Ew is wok-tossed to perfection with prawns, egg, and the signature dark and light soy sauce, delivering a smoky and savoury punch. The crispy honey garlic beef is sticky, sweet, and packed with garlic goodness, while the Malaysian special fried rice is hearty, aromatic, and packed with layers of flavour. Of course, you can’t miss the fried chicken nasi lemak—fragrant coconut rice, crispy fried chicken, sambal, and all the traditional accompaniments. And to finish, the creamy and frothy teh tarik is the perfect indulgence.

The staff are friendly and attentive, and the casual, welcoming atmosphere makes it a great spot for lunch, dinner, or takeaway. Most dishes are tasty though don't expect a fine dining level of plating. The meals are simple yet satisfying, and of a decent portion size. If you order a meat curry there isn't anything on your plate other than rice (or roti) and curry. Simple - no accompanying vegetables or garnishes.
Service is straight forward and you can order via the QR code on the table or via the wait staff or at the counter. All options are covered here. Great! Even better is that there is a decent printed menu that's easy to read and clear to understand.

Read moreI came in hoping to discover a good Malaysian eatery. Sadly, I was very disappointed. An overly ambitious menu covering too many items and cuisines should have been sufficient warning to any reasonably savvy diner like this one. My hopefulness and sense of charity for the new year very quickly got punished by a bowlful of disappointment passing off as "Nasi Lemak Kari Ayam". The nasi lemak part was pithy, but adequate. The chicken curry was shocking in an age of good internet recipes and how-to-cook YouTube videos: Slices of pre-boiled chicken breast (presumably meant for other stir-fry dishes like a Wat Dan Hor Fun) float about nakedly in a sugary, slap-dashed excuse for a curry broth. This is not Malaysian Kari Ayam at all. I'm shocked that such low standards of cookery can still be tolerated and demand for the price of $17.80 a pop. My partner's laksa was equally bad: A sickly sweet curry broth with overcooked vegetables and sad looking tofu play hide-and-seek with the diner. Perhaps the diner is expected to be a sonar-equipped submarine hunter. I really wanted to give this place a chance as the dining room crew were friendly, cheerful and helpful. I hope the chef or owner can cut down on the menu and focus on authentic quality rather...
