This place changed owners a few weeks back so any reviews older than 2 months are probably for the previous place owners, This review is for the NEW owners.
From the moment you walk in you are greeted and spoken to very politely. Customer service here was so good I feel it needs it's own little comment here as it is often overlooked but you really do notice how well they do this.
The food it something completely different to what you expect, the owner seems to be on a quest to challenge our traditional senses when it comes to food and he does this with amazing results.
The Gnocchi not Gnocchi is probably my favourite dish. Considering I hate Gnocchi with a passion and have tried it a bunch of times from some well known italian places and I just hate it, this took me by surprise. I mentioned my dislike for Gnocchi to the owner and he challenged me to try it, I sure am glad he did.
We tried 5 different things on the menu and our least favourite was the deep fried squid. Now don't take this comment as the squid's no good because it's fantastic, super crunchy using a semolina coating instead of flour however we simply enjoyed the other dishes MORE.
The wine selection was very small however they had only been open a couple of nights when we went and they were still getting set up.
As much as the food is incredible (and it really is) and as much as the customer service was notably amazing, the real cut above here is the owner and his partner.
They are both opera singers and have done the opera circuit through Italy for a number of years, they are extremely friendly and love to sit and have a chat with you if you want to but after your dinner, stick around and enjoy a few drinks because the owner heads over to the piano and busts out some of the best tunes you can imagine.
We are talking amazing redos of some classic from the 70's but the real goosebump moment, the eye moistener was when he belted out Nessun dorma with such passion and ferocity that it could be heard through most of the restaurant area of Surf Parade.
One small negative (which didn't bother me personally but some may not like it) is on the night we went you had to pay for each thing you ordered as you ordered it as opposed to settling up at the end. The pure and simple reason for this is on their opening night they had two groups of people that ate and drank all night then did a runner. This is not a negative on the restaurant, this is on the morons who don't have the common decency to pay their bill.
Would I go there again? absolutely 100%, in fact I have already booked my next visit there. I have a feeling this will become a regular dinner...
Read moreMade a booking a few weeks in advance. Upon arrival we were sat on the external foot path, no biggie, but it was right on the entry exit. We had 2 bar tables butted together above us, we were on a low table tacked on the end, with those patrons apologising for the fact that felt they were sitting on us whilst we were eating dinner.
When we asked to be moved the lady rolled her eyes because a table is a table and this was the one reserved for us with no others available.
The people at the bar table above us had to pull down the makeshift wall to get to their chair. And we’re also constantly asking to be moved.
My chair was kicked a half a dozen times by patrons arriving and leaving, whilst I was attempting to eat and drink. I was hit with a handbag and shoved by someone trying to get out because the entry was unattended and the patrons where milling at our table.
Food was delicious but over priced. 5 prawns in my pasta dish which tasted delicious just not enough. Big chunks of fat on the lamb with hardly any meat. The Arancini was 2 relatively small balls, however the sauce for this was amazing. We skipped dessert and follow up drinks because the atmosphere was extremely unpleasant.
I’d like to note the waiter who organised our dinner and drinks was amazing. Continually apologising for the seating and trying his best to get our meals and drinks promptly so we could leave.
We attended due to the singing chef, he nor did any other singer appear whilst we were there 7:30-8:45 on a Saturday night. We attended the chefs prior restaurant many times for perfect meals and the theatrical atmosphere.
I was sorry to find that this place didn’t hit the mark, if your looking for or expecting something similar I wouldn’t recommend. It could definitely be much more if they were organised with their seating.
I’d also be more understanding of the poor seating if I hadn’t booked weeks in advance and just turned up and this was what was available. In fact I would have walked out due to the seating arrangement. But to secure the booking we had to put down a credit card that was pre authorised and were worried we’d be charged the $50 per person...
