Overpriced for subpar food, scattered and slow service. Our shared main dishes came out one at a time without the rice we had ordered so we were eating everything separately with no rice otherwise the dishes would've all gotten cold. We've eaten in both high-end and mid-range Chinese restaurants all over Asia and the US, and the main shared dishes always came out at the same time with the rice so you could eat all of it together on your plates WITH rice. We had to flag down the waiters every single time we needed something, they never checked on us, one of the guys tried to help whenever we asked, but the rest were absolutely hopeless. There was no structure to the service at all, it was very unorganized and messy (I've worked as a waiter/server/busser in the beginning of my hospitality career at Hyatt Regency & Four Seasons & Aman Resorts). My martini took forever, I saw it sitting at the bar ready to go for a good 15 minutes before it got to me, I was tempted to walk up and grab it myself. We saw other patrons sitting there twiddling their thumbs with empty tables as well waiting for their food between courses. The Peking duck was missing scallions/spring onions, we paid $75 for two tiny bites of duck. Crab and corn soup was underwhelming with barely any crab in it. The soft shell crab and prawns were the only dishes that were very good, but they were all rather small portions for the price, even though we ordered 2 of the crab servings, and several other main dishes (garlic crispy chicken, beef & mushrooms, salt & pepper prawns, tofu & pork, stir fried veggies, fried rice and steamed rice) in addition to the Peking duck and soup for 6 people. My skinny youngest brother was still hungry after his meal.
I got there 10 minutes early to drop off a basque burnt cheesecake I made along with a box of candles to bring out after dinner as it was my husband's birthday. I asked if it wasnt too much to ask if they could put all the candles on the cake. They obligingly yes of course, no problem. Then when it came to serving it they only put 1 measely little candle on it.
What a huge disappointment this place was, especially since it was for a special occasion. We're at the Star quite often as my parents are platinum members and we really like their other restaurants Cucina Vivo and Harvest. Next time you’re at the Star and craving Chinese food you're better off going to Mei Wei.
The two stars were for the ambiance, as it is a nice setting, and the staff were mostly friendly... just overwhelmed and chaotic and slow with...
Read moreFirstly thank you for the food and service. Lovely dinning space. Food quality was good. The technique and and style is definitely there. However I wasn't necessarily wowed by it, and perhaps if I was assisted with the menu properly I would have made the correct choice for my taste.
When it comes to the service... A gentleman that I believe was a manager who was dressed in a suit, chose to rudely dismiss me when asking for his attention at the end of the night, and directed me to ask another waiter. Sadly, due to this the staff missed out of a very good tip that I was trying to organise with him to be split for all the waiters that helped us.
When it comes to our waitress...The best way I can explain it is that the her attitude was (I will provide the best service but I don't really care what you think of your experience) there was a particular sense of stand-offish energy that came to the table every time she was asked for something. I'm not sure if it was a very busy exhausting night for her or that I personally put her off somehow. Once again the standard is very high and the practice is excellent, the attitude however by her only, was very odd to me. I would have appreciated more help with the menu.
All the other servers were excellent, practice as well as energy, all smiled and were very very sweet and kind to me. I know that's hard to do in hospitality at the end of the night. It is definitely a hard job.
I will also mention that the practice of providing a complementary drink for my anniversary celebration with my husband as well as a slice of cake for my birthday was VERY much appreciated and it was so lovely and heart warming. Who ever is setting that standard and practice is on point.
Thank you all for...
Read moreProbably one of the worst dining experience I have had at the Star Gold Coast. We ordered a whole Peking duck and when the duck came the waiter did not show it to us for our approval before proceeded to carving up into pieces. She quickly hid everything in the pancake before we were able to say no or take a photo of the dried up old duck that was obviously made a few days ago. The duck was desiccated and dehydrated, the meat dried and chewy. I don’t think anyone should serve that kind of food in a 5 star restaurant. When I called the restaurant to reserve a Peking Duck I did mean for them to reserve the duck from a few days ago and sell it to be when I arrive. I had a few nice meals at Uncle Su previously but I don’t think we will ever go back there again. Nor should anyone!
It shows that the restaurant only cares about bottom line and does not give two hoots about food safety and hygiene by serve their customers food that was made days ago. If I were given the opportunity to take the photo of the duck I would have taken this case to the Food Safety Authority for review. Very disappointing and simply...
