A Thai Culinary Gem in Hobart CBD
If you’re looking for an authentic yet refined Thai dining experience in Hobart CBD, Bangkok City is a good-visit. Offering a tantalizing selection of dishes with a well-balanced mix of traditional Thai flavors and a touch of Asian fusion, this restaurant delivers a satisfying experience for those who crave the richness of Thai cuisine.
My overall taste experience was an impressive 4 out of 5, making it one of the best Thai meals I’ve had in Tasmania with 5 out of 5 specialties in their Thai Food.
Beef Fried Rice: A Fragrant and Hearty Delight
The beef fried rice was a standout dish, packed with deep, smoky flavors and a rich umami profile. The rice was well-coated in sauce without being overly greasy, while the crispy fried shallots on top added a delightful crunch. The inclusion of fresh greens, tender beef slices, and a hint of citrus from the lemon wedge created a balanced and aromatic dish. The seasoning was spot on, reminiscent of the street-style fried rice found in Bangkok, but with a touch of refinement.
Pork Pad Thai: A Perfect Balance of Sweet, Savory, and Spicy
The pork pad Thai was another highlight, served with a generous portion of bean sprouts, green onions, crushed peanuts, and chili flakes on the side for customization. The noodles had the right amount of chewiness, coated in a sauce that blended the perfect balance of sweetness, tanginess, and a savory umami kick. The pork was tender, well-marinated, and complemented the overall dish beautifully. A squeeze of lemon elevated the flavors even further, adding a fresh citrusy contrast.
Chicken Satay Skewers: Rich, Creamy, and Packed with local + peanut Flavor
The chicken satay skewers were grilled to perfection, with a slight char on the edges that enhanced their smoky aroma. The peanut satay sauce was luxuriously creamy, rich, and had just the right balance of sweetness and nuttiness. The additional sprinkle of crushed peanuts on top added extra texture, making every bite a pleasure. The accompanying side salad provided a refreshing contrast to the richness of the dish.
Bangkok City delivers an authentic Thai experience with refined execution. Each dish was flavor-packed, well-balanced, and beautifully presented. The use of fresh ingredients, bold flavors, and thoughtful seasoning made this meal truly enjoyable. Whether you’re a die-hard Thai food lover or a casual diner looking for a delicious meal, this place will not disappoint, except for the crowd seat arrangement.

Read moreAs a Thai person, I was really craving Thai food for lunch while visiting Hobart, Tasmania. I happened to come across this restaurant not far from where I was staying, and the prices looked quite reasonable, so I decided to give it a try.
The staff inside were friendly, but from what I could see, none of them appeared to be Thai — possibly including the kitchen team. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, of course, but when I tasted the food, it didn’t quite match the traditional Thai flavors I’m used to growing up with.
That said, the food wasn’t bad. It was well presented, the portion was fair, and the service was attentive. Perhaps I was simply expecting something closer to the Thai taste I know — or maybe I misunderstood the style the restaurant was going for. And to be fair, this was just lunch, so I can’t speak for what their dinner menu might be like.
This review is simply to help others who are specifically looking for authentic Thai cuisine. If that’s what you’re after, you might want to try somewhere else. But if you’re happy with Thai-inspired food that’s quick and budget-friendly, this place could still be a decent choice.
Wishing the owners continued success, and thank you for the...
Read moreBangkok City Cafe is a hidden gem, right in the heart of Hobart. I travel for work and eat out regularly & though I expected reasonable food, what was served was beyond delightful. Having grown up in Thailand, it is rare to find food that is as good if not better than what can be found on most street corners there. I had intended to have Pad Thai, but in reviewing the menu I saw ‘tamarind eggs’. I wondered hopefully if they might be the famous usually hard to find ‘Son-in-law eggs’. Confirming this, I can t describe how this made my day, I ordered vegetarian friend rice to go with them. The eggs were divine, the sauce was sweet, sour and flavours balanced, took me right back to childhood. The fried rice had the distinct street food texture, flavour and was a generous portion. It was also more than just street food, with extra elements that didn’t stray to far but rather enhanced the flavour profile. This husband and wife (she is the chef & he does front of house) has a warm, quirky vibe, well priced and superb food. My only regret is that it has taken two years of work trips to Hobart before I...
