I stopped watching Masterchef after about season 3, so really had not much of a clue about this Ben Ungermann guy from season 9 who went on to open an ice cream shop in Ipswich, except there was a bit of a buzz around it and almost 2 years later I finally get there for a gander and a taste. We had 2 single scoops: * Lavender and honeycomb - wifey’s pick; I didn't really like it... maybe a bit of an acquired taste. * Strawberries and cream - the boy’s pick; very nice. Both scoops were served in waffle cones, a great pairing to some smooth as ice cream. You do pay a premium for the gourmet though - $7 for a single and $10 double scoop, so it helped that we had a BOGOF voucher from the Entertainment Book. In terms of pricing alone, $7 is about what you’d pay at some other ice cream/gelato shops charge for a double scoop, though that’s not factoring in actual serving sizes/weights. Love the venue/decor too, and getting a look see into the kitchen where the ice creams are made. Worth a visit if you’re in the area, or even to make a day trip of it - we spent a few hours at Queens Park and the Ipswich Nature Centre before coming here for a cool treat. I wouldn’t mind trying some of their milkshakes and/or plated desserts next time, whenever that might be. Actually, given they’ve recently opened a second store at Marina Mirage, it might be that I’ll manage to get there before making a return visit to Ipswich! Pro tip: don’t be like me and pay $1 for metered street parking on Limestone St. There’s actually a car park on the other side of the compound - enter via South St. Save that money for the ice cream!

The restaurant has a nice vibe and is in a great spot to have a bite to eat before picking the kids up from school. Customer service was great - we were served within minutes of coming through the doors. Booths were clean and tables cleared quickly once guests left from their seats. The sour cream loaded fries were presented well, tasted nice, and were a decent serving for 2 people. The price of the 600ml drinks was reasonable. If this restaurant wants to go to the next level and bring more customers through their doors/retain customers they really need to focus on perfecting their burgers. Both the vegan and the UB classic burgers were bland and lacked flavour. A signature ungermann burger sauce or something with a little more flavour would position your burgers on par with competition from bigger companies. Adding vegan cheese onto the vegan burgers will also add a different element to the vegan burger and maybe consider buying better burger rolls. If people walk away and say they've had better elsewhere they won't come back for a second taking so adjustment of the burgers is highly recommended. We will definitely be back but hoping the burger menu is improved prior to that time.

Ungermann's is a little cute, gives that retro vibe with the furniture, decor and music, but that was pretty much all we liked! I'm not sure if staff were just getting into the Halloween spirit or their attitudes are always that dead. Food was very average for what you pay (and I'm never one to complain about the price of food if it's great food!). We ordered meals and drinks, I ordered 2 thickshakes and 1 milk shake, we received 2 MILKSHAKES after our food had been served, and 1 THICKSHAKE as we were ready to leave, which we watched the lady walk back and forth behind the counter trying to make the said thickshack. Our meals came out 1 meal at a time, with up to 5 minutes before another was brought out to our table. We (there were 3 of us) ordered the fruit salad waffles - was honestly the best thing we received, though the waffle could of been cooked for a short time longer, but still delicious. Ordered a fried brie and meat burger with caramelized onions and cranberry, now for nearly $19 I expected something a little nicer, the description of the burger is exactly what you get, not that that's a bad thing I guess but to be honest the meal was worth no more than $13, the bun was so stale that even heated the bun was still stale. Ordered the Ungermann's Burger - again wasn't worth the near $19 but wasn't distasteful, again same stale bun situation. And the loaded fries, with sweet and sour sauce and sour cream - look I don't know it it's the cheap brand of chips they use or the fact that maybe the oil needs changing but all chips were not fantastic. In all we spent $102 on 1 waffle, 2 burgers, 1 loaded fries and 3 shakes. We will sadly not return.

Oh dear. I'd forgotten how bad the service is after having been to the UB ice cream parlour in the past. Service is pretty much non-existent (table was filthy, and we cleaned it ourselves with napkins). Which btw do not come to you. We had to hunt up cutlery and napkins. (Frozen) Chips clearly came out of a packet, which might have been improved by some sauce of some kind, any kind! Just dry and limp. My burger had a tiny piece of limp lettuce, a tiny tiny piece of unripe tomato and about a teaspoon of mayo. How I longed for some sauce or mayo or spicy guac or anything really to help down the dry chicken burger. The chicken looked like it had gone thru a house fire but surprisingly was not too dry. Hubby ate a beef, brie and caramelised onion burger; his issue also was the complete lack of anything spicy or juicy - where's the sauce(s)? There was a minute bit of onion on mine, and on his - he said it wasn't caramelised either. I give the food 2 stars 'cos my chicken was moist-ish. No atmosphere here really tho I do love the striped seats. We often say to each other - if you're going to bother with making food for others, why not make it good food???!!

If you're looking for a fun place to grab dinner, lunch or breakfast - then give UB's a try. We went for dinner during the SPARK Festival and although it was busy, the staff were lovely and our wait time for the food was not too long. We ordered the classic burger, chicken burger and a kids cheeseburger. The chicken was cooked to perfection, crispy on the outside while juicy on the inside. It came with creamy coleslaw giving the burger a great balance of flavours. The classic burger came with a beef patty, lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese, pickles and a homemade special sauce and was tasty, juicy and tender. The kids burger had the same patty as the classic, but without the salad and again was very tasty. We enjoyed the retro interior, booth seating and electro swing music playing. Overall it was a great experience. Next time we'll start with dessert as we really wanted to try the waffles, chocolate poffertjes and banana split, however we couldn't eat another bite!

A delightful ice-cream shop located in the heart of Ipswich Town within the grounds of the former technical college. Be ready to try some absurd sounding however delicious ice-ecreams. With runner up Master Chef winner and brother Danny and Ben using fresh and local ingredients to create and a delightful taste to the palette. The abundance of flavours both modern spins on otherwise unthought of ice-cream ingredients to classic favours you will definitely be leaving feeling satisfied and coming back for more. We had the Summer Tasting Plate and at $22 we were left full just on ice-cream. It had an assortment of Lavender and Honeycomb, Lemon Honey and Thyme and Pumpkin Seed Oil Ice-cream combined with a Chocolate Mandarin filled Cannoli. The three are ample for two people are these contrasting flavours and just what’s needed after dinner. Cannot recommend this place enough and combined with the lovely service sets the scene for a great post dinner trip!
