A Culinary Symphony of Elegance at Cumulus Cumulus, a name synonymous with culinary excellence, once again proved itself as a beacon of gastronomic brilliance during my today's dining experience. From the first bite to the last, each dish at Cumulus was a testament to the artistry and innovation that defines this establishment. The Tuna Tartare was a mesmerizing introduction to the meal. The impeccably fresh tuna, delicately paired with goat's curd, green pea, and mint, created a symphony of flavors that danced on the palate. The combination of textures and the bright, refreshing notes from the mint showcased Cumulus's commitment to sourcing top-quality ingredients and crafting dishes with finesse. The Fremantle Octopus continued to captivate my taste buds. Tender and expertly prepared, the octopus seamlessly blended with kipfler potato, chilli, and olive tapanade, offering a medley of tastes that unfolded with every forkful. The balance of heat from the chilli and the richness from the olive elevated this dish to a sublime gastronomic experience. The pinnacle of the evening was reached with the Dry Aged Duck Breast. Cooked to perfection, the duck exhibited a tantalizing combination of crispines of skin, tenderness and depth of flavor. Golden beetroot added a subtle sweetness, while blackberry and pickled walnut provided a burst of contrasting notes. This dish was a masterclass in culinary ingenuity, showcasing Cumulus's dedication to pushing the boundaries of taste and presentation. The ambiance at Cumulus was as inviting as the cuisine was exceptional. The simple yet classy decor set the stage for an memorable dining experience, overlooking chef's in action. The attentive staff (both front and back of the house), well-versed in the intricacies of the menu, added an extra layer of sophistication to the afternoon. Cumulus has truly mastered the art of curating a dining experience that transcends the ordinary. From the creative composition of each dish to the seamless service, this restaurant stands as a paragon of culinary excellence. If you are seeking a gastronomic journey that marries innovation with style, Cumulus is the destination that will leave you with a lasting appreciation for the artistry of dining. This was my 4th wisit to Cumulus. Each visit to Cumulus is a celebration of flavor, and I eagerly anticipate my return to indulge in the culinary delights that await.

This is a review on the bar and service and not on the food. I was invited here by a friend who has been a regular for years. It was a wet Melbourne evening and came in with raincoat, beanie, and brolly. I was definitely out of place but once I undressed to my normal attire, fitted right in. We sat at the bar and conveniently there were little clothing/bag hooks in front of the bar stools. Bingo! Behind us was buzzing with those dropping in for a drink, starting an early dinner and by the time I left, the first of the solid evening diners. The waiter (wish I got his name) was so lovely and his customer service was outstanding as was anyone we interacted with. A G&T plus a beer to start. Impressed that the straw was metal - resueable. Nice touch everyone. Then we were enticed with a Negroni because.....wait for it.....it’s Negroni week. The waiter gave us a concise summary of what it is but frankly, after the word gin I was already in! I watched him prepare one and wish I’d made a video. It’s quite the art to mix and blend the ingredients. The first sip is tantalising with the aroma of the citrus on the glass rim along with the smoky mix of alcohol. I can’t say it was brilliant but certainly appreciated the ‘experience’ of trying something new. If the food is as food as the drinks service then I will return and rereview Cumulus. Thank you to all the staff for a great few hours respite from the rain and warm ambience.

This has been the most frustrating and humiliating experience we've ever had at a restaurant in Melbourne! We saw this restaurant on Gimlet's page, and decided to give it a go for my husband's 30th birthday dinner. -The ambience was alright, too busy and loud. Not our taste. -Asked for a wine bottle suggestion, that they got it right! Liked it and the Sommelier came back to see if we liked it!. -For food we just opted in for the set-menu, hoping to try the best on the menu and not waste time on the guessing game. The veg options could use more creativity. -The waitress seemed friendly at first. However we left with so much anger in the end. -Came in early, got seated at around 8:20 and probably put in the order by 8:40. Got the desserts at around 11! For a set-menu, you already know what we are having for the rest of the night. How bad is the planning that 4 courses were spread over 2.5hrs (when the reservation is limited to 2hrs!) -I started noting the timeliness and guess what? We got our main courses almost 1 hr after the previous course!!! In that one hour, not one person came to checkin if we needed water, more drinks nothing! let alone inform us why its taking so long. I almost wanted to leave by then, but just wanted to pull through the dessert course so that I could wish my partner. So we get our main course at 10:20, and at 10:40 I requested the waitress that we're done with the meal and if you could please get our desserts quickly. (She could have easily sensed my irritation, but did not ask anything). Another 20mins wait time, during which the table beside us (bigger group, came in an hour after us) get their desserts before us. Are you serious ? -And again throughout the dinner nobody checked on us if we wanted anything else, if we liked anything (expect the sommelier ). No explanation of any courses too. -I booked a few days ago I guess and requested for a message and candle with the dessert. Simon from Cumulus emailed that they don't do messages but could provide the candle. I personally called him and said candle is fine. At the restaurant, they did note and remember that it was a birthday and wished us. But fast forward to dessert time, no candle or any sign of birthday! The table beside us received their desserts at the same time, with two people on the table celebrating and both of them were acknowledged! I wouldn't usually care for it, but it was a special one and had personally called to tell! Left the desserts coz we had no mood by then. - We waited around the counter before paying to have a chat about our experience (as the waitress wouldn't ask!). The hostess/venue manager(tall and slim lady) wouldn't meet eyes with us! She held the door open for guests exiting before us, but she wouldn't even look at us! All this behaviour point towards an obvious reason which I don't want to call out. So just paid and left. That was $300 down the drain

I ordered a selection of shared dishes. I realized it was a mistake, not just with the menu but also with the restaurant choice. I have no intention of revisiting, and here’s why 1. Noise like eating in the middle of a market - I couldn’t even understand what the other person was saying, let alone hear the explanations of the food. It felt like eating in the midst of a crowded Victoria Market. 2. Terrible service - First, I ordered a drink, and without a word or explanation, a bewildered staff member just left a can at my table. I tried to understand it might be because they were busy. Then, it took 20 minutes between clearing my plate and waiting for the next dish. Staff repeatedly passed by my table ignoring the empty plates. Meanwhile, they kept checking on other tables about their food but didn’t say a word to me. Was I just supposed to eat whatever was given? The main dish and side dishes were supposed to be served together, but I received the main dish and one side. The staff said they would bring the other side dish soon. I waited patiently, and it arrived almost at the end of my meal. Even when I wanted to pay, I had to wait 15-20 minutes more because the staff were chatting with each other. The restaurant wasn’t even full. What’s the problem here? Even the chefs seemed out of it... 3. Poor seasoning of the food - The menu itself wasn’t bad, and the ingredients were fine. But the food was just salty. So salty that I kept looking for water. But then the main dish, lamb shoulder, was completely bland... How am I supposed to adjust to these flavors? I dined alone, and the total cost was about $130. This was the worst restaurant experience I’ve had in Melbourne, and I don’t plan on returning. I’d rather get a sandwich and coffee from the cafe next door. it would be much more worthwhile. And now that I think about it, I have no idea what I was supposed to do with the radish and miso sauce. Was I supposed to spread it on the bread, or just dip the radish in the sauce and eat it? Thinking back, they didn’t explain anything.

Dinner at Cumulus Inc. was an interesting experience. It didn’t start well. We had made a booking in advance for a special night, which was mentioned in the booking, but the host thought it was fine to seat us at the bar table along with others. This was very disappointing. When I expressed my dissatisfaction, he told us that we would have to wait another 45 minutes to get a table. At that point, I decided to go to another restaurant. He then suggested taking us upstairs, though he mentioned we might not like the place. However, when we went upstairs, it was a totally different vibe. It was classy and quiet, unlike downstairs, which had a very basic and noisy atmosphere. I can’t help but wonder why he didn’t put us there in the first place, thinking the bar table was suitable for celebrating a special night. Things changed for the better once we were seated at the table. The server was extremely friendly and informative, genuinely showing compassion and care about making our night the best it could be. She checked on us frequently and had friendly chats with us. The food was simply delicious. We chose the 6-course chef special, and it was worth it. Every item had a beautiful presentation and was filled with flavors. The cocktails were delicious too. The vibe was perfect, with beautiful lights and atmosphere. I would have given 1 star, but thanks to the server and the food, I’m giving 3 stars. The team needs to reflect on why we were treated like that initially. It could have been the perfect night for us, but the initial sourness lingered throughout the evening and was the only topic we discussed at the table.

Although a Melbourne institution, Cumulus has a relaxed vibe, serving simple European dishes with mix results, and are very, very casually plated. Let me be upfront - some dishes work and others don't. The good ones, boquerones (vinegar marinated anchovies) swimming in olive oil and the decadently rich, melt-in-the-mouth, slow roasted lamb shoulder are winners. The prosciutto and melon should have been, could have been winners, with the right ingredients. The flavour combination of salty, complex ham flavour with sweet juicy melon are sublime. Unfortunately this dish at Cumulus misses the brief completely - the thoughtlessly scattered melons are hard, not juicy, not sweet. I recently had a very good cheese platter at another Melbourne restaurant. With that in mind, I ordered the cheese platter from Cumulus ($28). I am not a cheese connoisseur, but if you look at the picture, I think you will share my sentiment that the cheeses have not been properly stored. The soft cheese is firm (when it should be soft and creamy), and the hard cheese, bland and brittle. In addition, I think the plating of food is important. I am not talking about Instagram aspirations. An attractive plating whets the appetite. Uninterested, random plonk of food is a big turn off. The plating of the prosciutto and cheese at Cumulus, for me, veer dangerously close to the latter.
