Absolutely fabulous venue (if you can find it). Reservations a must for this fun hidden speakeasy if you want to avoid a lengthy wait. Delicious theatrical cocktails an absolute must visit Melbourne gem particularly if you are a cocktail connoisseur like myself Like all good Melbourne bars EDV is hidden in a laneway sans signage and on a scale of 1 to super difficult is a solid 7 to locate. It all adds to the exclusivity and prestige because when you finally do enter you a transported to an old world wonderland of upbeat jazz music where half the cocktails have made the best in the world list. The other half utilise liquid nitrogen, fire, or smoke clouds to dial up the theatrics, just in case you weren't already having a supremely novel experience. These bartenders are the ultimate mixologists and as such I don't think you could ever make a bad drink choice here. Everything is perfectly balanced and theres plenty of variety from the classic favourites to bold and exciting new creations. Their abilities with martinis are second to none. Never before has their been so many options it not simply vodka or gin, it's not simply wet or dry it's not simply olive or twist of lime. Ordering a martini is actually an experience in itself. I cannot recommend this bar enough but ensure you book so you aren't loitering in the laneway. My personal favourites are the drinks with the fun garnishes; the popcorn flip (garnish self explanatory) which while it's a cognac based drink is actually sweet due to the addition of white chocolate. Quite the unique selection. My other go to is the aviator which has a cloud garnish (fairy floss) complete with a mini plane on it. Super cute and creative. Great ambiance, great for something a bit fun and different and great date venue

Loved the experience. Unfortunately, there’s a 1.5h dining time limit. It would have been a much better experience if we had 2h. Got a bit worried looking for the place at first. It’s in a small lonely alley in a popular area. You’ve really got to trust google map for this one. It’s exactly where Google says it is. However the door is really sus. It’s a strange odd-looking wooden door next to some stairs in the building right at the end of the slope/alley. When you open the door, it looks like it’s the back door but it’s not. It’s the actual entrance. So you just wait at the end of that narrow L-shaped corridor until the hostess gets you seated. Do make reservations in advance or else be prepared to wait 1-2h It’s a whiskey bar so whiskey flights are available. There’s a really good range of whiskey 🥃 available. But, I think the cocktails here are more worthwhile to experience. They are THAT GOOD. The absolute best was the Assassin Sting. The combination of the sweet cocktail with the savory chili flakes on the glass was AMAZING!!!! I can honestly say that it was the cocktail with the most complex flavour profile in all the ones that I tried that night. The rob roy looked good and tasted smooth. The birth of Venus was a typical girly drink and the poppers and ice cream elevated the drink. The giant killer was interesting and tropically refreshing . The expresso cocktail packed a slight punch. Can’t really remember what other cocktails we ordered lol Ordered the olives to snack on. They don’t really have any food. And I find it a bit hard to accept that they don’t provide bar snacks. If they did, they would have gotten 5 ⭐️ from me

@edvmelbourne 📍CBD Eau De Vie is a classic, 1920’s America inspired cocktail bar located in Melbourne’s CBD. The entrance is discreet, hidden down Malthouse lane. They also have a location in Sydney, which once made it to #13 on the Worlds Best Bar list. 🏆 Secretly behind a book case, you can find the Whisky Room, with a large collection of rare and exclusive whiskies. It is also home to their Bottle Lockers, where you can purchase your favourite spirit bottle and store it for your next visit. 🥃 Regardless of your usual choice of poison, you will most likely be able to enjoy anything from their menu. Almost all of them come with some sort of theatrics and a story. To pair with them they also offer a small menu of plates to dine from. 🍴 We enjoyed all of our cocktails, but my favourite was the Tiny Danza, which comes in a flute glass, had a strong taste of capsicum and chilli. If you like a Chilli Marg, this is reminiscent. 🥰 The Espresso Zabaione also impressed us, which comes with your choice of vodka, rum or whisky. Liquid nitrogen is used to make the cream set on top, overall very strong but unique. The Honey Butter Old Fashioned #2 was a nice version of the classic and the Banderillero is served in a Viking horn! It is often completely booked especially on the weekends so make a booking or prepare for a wait! We walked in and joined a waitlist which got us in within the hour. Up there in my top favourite bars, a great spot to come for a date night! The Eau-de-Vie Library is home to their degustation table where they host a 5 course, cocktail degustation experience. This is $175 and includes food and drinks.

My husband and I had previously come here for cocktails and really enjoyed our experience. So when they advertised for a cocktail paired menu night, we jumped at the opportunity. The space is beautiful and felt very special as there were only 3 other couples. If I had rhe cocktails separate, at rhe bar, I think they would have been quite enjoyable. The sangria was the best sangria I've ever had. However, the whole point of the night was that it was a paired experience with food and with that in mind, the night was a real let down and not at all worth the money. Firstly, my partner and I felt none of the cocktails paired well with the meals. They weren't balanced at all and every one of them was overly sweet (this coming from a sweet lover). Normally a pairing beings out a particular flavour in the food, or it might juxtapose to cut through sweetness or fat. The cocktails were like drinking desert with every meal. Secondly the food. Our menu was predominantly sea food and we could not eat at least 2 of the meals. The prawns were so fishy and not at all fresh that I actually (politely) spat it out of my mouth. Another dish had muscles that again, were not fresh at all. I was so sad! Gastronomy is my favourite and having had a good experience previously with their cocktails, I was pumped to have some good food. Considering the night had 5 meals and we could only safely eat 3 let alone that we had to then go get more food because we were left hungry, it was a real let down. Overall, I recommend going there for cocktails only.

One of Melbourne’s best cocktail bars! This jazz-infused speakeasy style cocktail bar is hidden behind a closed wooden door down Malthouse Lane 🤫 Despite being hard to find, they’re so popular it’s almost certain there’ll be a long queue if you rock up on a Saturday night 🌙 The cocktails are some of the best you can find in Melbourne - each one is experimental, theatrical, and puts on a bit of a show 🎭 ☕️ Espresso Zabaione (with rum, $24) An EDV signature - this is by far one of the best espresso cocktails I’ve ever tried 😍 It’s with a delicious vanilla mousse that’s super chilled with liquid nitrogen to create a frozen cap. Highly recommend trying it with rum! 🏮 Black Lantern ($23) An exciting and unique drink made with whiskey, coconut and red bean milk, salt and sesame oil! Also served with a little cookie on the side. This drink is moreish, rich and smokey 🤤 🦆 Don Giovanni ($23) A very theatrical experience served from a duck-anger champagne style 🤩 The perfect balance of sweet, citrus, floral, and bitters! 🍋 Kitty at the Cocobongo ($23) An EDV favourite! This one’s a very safe option - it’s fruity, citrusy, and very refreshing 🙌

Sensational hidden bar with beautifully crafted cocktails served with theatre. We couldn’t get a booking online in advance so we decided to go there early shortly after they opened; we arrived around 4.30pm and were seated immediately. This is truly a hidden bar - we struggled to find it and eventually had to ask someone. It’s a very smart elegant yet cool bar with several smaller side rooms (there was a hen party happening in one area and a baby shower in another!) Staff are incredibly knowledgeable and will help you navigate the huge cocktail menu to make sure you find your perfect drink. Within 20 min the place was absolutely full and buzzing. It was very entertaining watching all the cocktails being “created” behind the bar and table side - blowtorches, woodsmoke, dry ice .... several drinks came with lots of “theatre”! For our second round we knew / had seen exactly what we wanted so just had to point them out! Such a fun way to start our Saturday night. As we left there was a long queue stretching out the door - that makes it much a easier to find the entrance / bar location :-) Highly recommend.
