Fonda has really upped it's game in flavours since my last visit and deserves a return visit from anyone who has not dined there of late. Focusing on updating recipes rather than presenting a whole new menu, I was definitely impressed. Not just a pretty picture, the standouts had to be everything taco from the baja snapper taco to the limited edition slow-cooked lamb birria tacos - seriously I had no idea lamb instead of beef in a birria could taste this good! And the consumé was thicker than usual in the best way giving the dish an explosion of flavour in every bite! Even the barbacoa beef taco and chicken asado taco were quality but had nothing on the lamb and fish which definitely stole the show. The lamb shoulder & chimichurri burrito felt like a naughty addition without being naughty at all. And of course having to try the hot sauce, it added a great kick without being too hot to handle. But if you're after a more subtle, almost non-existent nudge then the Jane Fonda sauce will be you new best friend. With 5 locations in Melbourne and 9 across the East Coast, the Flinders Lane restaurant boasts a huge dining area with a great atmosphere to stay a while and order a margarita or three..

ORDERED: 🌽 Charred corn: Chargrilled half cob of corn with chipotle aioli, parmesan ricotta, paprika & lime ($6.00 per piece) 🧆 Chipotle Mac & Cheese croquettes: Smokey mac & cheese croquettes, with Jane Fonda salsa (mild) ($11.00) 🍠 Sweet potato chips to share: Sweet potato chips with chipotle aioli ($12.00) 🌮 Crispy rock ling tacos: Rock Ling, guacamole, pickled carrot & onion, chipotle aioli, shredded cabbage, fresh lime ($7.00 per piece) 🌮 Chargrilled chicken quesadilla: Tender chargrilled chicken, with our smoked cheese blend, pico de gallo and baby spinach. Served with basil-jalapeño aioli. ($18.50) It was $39.49pp on average, which included a drink each. REVIEW: 👰 Went to Fonda to have a bridal shower/hens. It was a great open venue that was casual and came with an easy way to split the bill (QR code for self order). Across the room, I could see another bridal shower happening as well! ✔ The food was decent. - Sweet potato chips are fantastic to share and munch on in between the food. - Corn was great, but the parmesan ricotta was too overwhelming. I'd like to taste corn in my elotes, and not cheese! 🧀 - Fish tacos were our favourite. They're not the best fish tacos I've had, but the crispiness of the fish came across well while the vegetables kept things light and refreshing. Lots of crunch! 🐟 - Quesadillas were a little too cold for our liking. Although the veggies in it was great (especially the pico de gallo). ✔ The staff were friendly, although several reminders had to go out for water carafes. However, they were great about delivery food (even shouting out the name the order was put under - helped a lot!) and came out at a good pace. 😃

I’m very disappointed with our experience here. We called earlier to make a booking and were assured they would have a table for us, we were not asked for our details to confirm the booking, she just said see you at 7:30 and bye. We showed up 5 minutes early and waited to be seated, when asked about booking, we advised them that we had a made a booking but were not asked for details, then the server proceeded to let us know that they didn’t have my more tables but a small one, we were just happy to have a table so we didn’t mind. We sat down and thankfully they cleaned the table and then we ordered our food at the counter, our server was nice. The food came one at time and late. Which was okay but we had the holy guacamole and it was literally just mashed avocados on top of stale tortilla chips. The we ordered 4 chicken tacos and the kids did not even finish it, we had to leave it bc the chicken was burnt and overpowered with the spiciness. My mom did like the chicken burrito tho. I had the vegan burrito bowl, which was honestly just cabbage and like two spoons of the other ingredients, this was also left uneaten. No one checked up on our table to see if enjoyed our food but we were reminded that they were to close soon. We spent $152 and ate not even half of the food, I would probably recommend somewhere else and not this place. The margarita also had too much salt, there was no balance at all. It’s a shame because it’s a beautiful place and aesthetically pleasing but the food was definitely not worth it and very very disappointing. The picture is the good we left on the table

4 of us for lunch. Shared fried cauliflower bites, chips with Chipotle sauce and nachos. All delicious Mexican food. Then had sweet potato taco, husband chicken taco others chicken burrito and chicken quesadilla. Also delicious. However had to order drinks and food using QR code which I'm not a fan of. Ordered Prosecco and then later when went to order another, it had disappeared from menu!! What?? Turns out they had to order more supply from another Fonda restaurant, now call me crazy but wouldn't you get more in when stocks are low not when so low you have to take off menu? Also no coffee and as I have said before I'm always amazed at Melbourne CBD restaurants that don't offer coffee. The restaurant itself was quite dark, many areas looked like the light bulbs had been taken out or lighting was controlled for each individual table which doesn't make sense. The bathrooms were quite messy and paper towel dispenser empty. And also when the restaurant is half empty why are all the diners seated right next to each other? The table next to us was so close we could have put our arms around them and yet heaps of empty tables...it's the details that make a place not just the food, though the food was excellent. 24.4 3 of us for lunch shared nachos and Chipotle chips. Then I had corn, husband had chicken quesadilla and niece had burrito bowl. Drinks Proseccos, no sugar Coke, watermelon juice, frozen mojito. Food fine but ordering through app I detest.

Big, colourful and welcoming - first impressions of this Fonda. We were promptly seated with menus to look through. Soon we were queuing up to order and pay, no fuss with split bills - thumbs up. Like an efficient production, our orders started coming out soon after. We tucked into our dish with gusto. My Mex Bim Bap with pork was wholesome and tasty. Others were wowed by their flavoursome Fish Tacos and Chicken Quesadilla. The Horchata rice milk drink is deliciously spiced with cinnamon. Another thumbs up. In a group this size, somebody was bound to accidentally claim someone else's order (and start eating). This happened twice as a chain reaction. Hilarious for us but really inconvenient for Fonda staff. They just patiently worked out who was meant to have what corrected the situation without fuss. We totally messed up so their patience was much appreciated. Yet another thumbs up. Excellent place for a quick work lunch. Good, speedy service and good food. Seating wasn't too comfortable but then we were in and out within an hour.

Snarky host. Food was bland. Food for two guests was served well before our third guest. Had to ask for napkins. Never checked in by staff throughout our visit. Was not told that we had to walk up to order and pay at the register or to order by QR code at our table. Small birds were flying over our table (indoors). The restaurant modo is, "Mi Casa Su Casa". I didn't feel that way at all. The restaurant staff spoke in monotone or snarky like the host. We were walk-in guests and the host made us feel that he was 'doing us a favor' by getting us a table. I'm Mexican American and was rather embarrassed for the business to serve food that was tasteless and poorly presented (see photo). Lastly, I heard no music. It would have been nice to listen to beautiful Mexican music rather than hearing the clanking of dishes from the kitchen. COST: 3 meals, 1 appetizer, 2 margaritas ($20 each), 1 non alcoholic drink = $120 Will not return.
