It's such a lovely setting here, and despite the determined courtesy of the staff (which, I have to admit, is a big plus), there's still a lot of 'attitude' that comes with it. It's a slightly sullen, resistant, reluctant, obstinate sort of attitude, that doesn't make any sense to me - as someone who hails from the era of obliging service and willing demeanours. I'm wondering if it's a youthful posture, intended to deal out discreet rudeness. I mean, why wouldn't you heat up a chocolate croissant very briefly, on request, seeing as you do heat up other cake portions? What could possibly be the reason for refusing such a simple and easily accommodated ask? Because they are fresh, you say? Does that mean that the other cake portions are not fresh (so they need to be heated up in order to be palatable)? And what if I like my chocolate croissant every so slighty warmed and melty? Why would you deny me that little favour, since I am a customer? Why is it forbidden to heat up fresh pastry? Why so inflexible? I'm so confused....
Read moreNeed more staff or a better serving system to cope, esp with popular days. We left after waiting in the counter queue too long while the 2 front staff were too busy making orders to take any new ones. Note also they will only do take-aways for their last half hour from 4.30pm. But i have managed to have coffee and banana cake here once. The coffee ok but the cake was stale and unpleasant i couldnt eat it. Limited savoury food options (toasties, sandwiches etc), not the place to go if u are looking for more imaginative dishes. But the location is great, esp as now it is the only option for coffee in the park. But i personally think that so much more could be done to lever its assets, esp the outdoor spaces. Eg in autumn n winter, spots to sit that capture the sun are scarce. I think the decor is unremarkable and more enclosing than it need be without the wooden barrier btwn counter queue...

The historical Captains Cook cottage is small but jam packed with history and the botanical conservatory is also worth a look in if for nothing else than the change in scenery form all the buildings.
Watch out for wedding photographers on the weekend as they are everywhere trying to get that perfect shot. And of an evening there are a LOT of possums screeching and running around. Some people think they are cute (until you...
