Cool dumpling chinese restaurant in the Melbourne Central shopping center. Nice and spacious. HUGE menu.. quite overwhelming so would suggest to have a pre look before visiting! They offer more than just dumplings and have a huge range of authentic Chinese dishes. Decently priced and good portions.

We were a party of the 3 and shared everything. We got:

Vinegar ribs - highly recommend. Not too sweet and the right amount of tang. Squid tentacles - nice texture and not too greasy. Crushed cucumber - delicious and refreshing, but be warned there’s a lot of garlic involved! Peking duck pancakes - juicy duck, Nice and soft pancakes which were already pre made. Crab xiao long bao - nice and juicy. The soup tasted more porky than crabby. Chili wontons - delicious chili sauce and wontons were a nice size and texture. Pan fried pork and chive - nicely pan fried and crispy. Nice big filling. Various skewers - the chicken wing with shrimp paste was a little disappointing. We expected a wing stuffed with shrimp paste but it was more a chicken wing washed with shrimp paste flavor. The pork belly was pretty rich and the salt prawns were ok but prawns were not the freshest and was quite mushy in texture. They had a 2 for 1 offer so we ended up getting double of all the skewers unintentionally but was not a bad mistake.

Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the city and craving some authentic Chinese food. They have a big bar as well and offer wine, beer...

Strong suit is certainly the cantonese flavours in my opinion (a Malaysian Chinese Cantonese) and excellent service.

I had clams stirfried with xo sauce and extra chilli, snowfungus chinese dessert and pork-shrimp wonton soup with added noodles. The kitchen honoured my special request for extra chilli on the clams and they tasted amazing! That and the snow fungus chinese desser tasted just like how I remember in my hometown. Clams were fresh, I had no issues after eating them. It was a generous portion - my recommendation would be that the clams are best shared by 2 or more persons with other dishes, or if enjoyed by 1 person to only add rice.

Wontons and soup were average, on the bland side.

The dishes came out fairly quickly. As I had no cellphone data I couldn't pay online, but the staff were polite and helpful in facilitating payment by the counter. I was particularly impressed with how the staff and kitchen managed to handle the queue of 8+ persons ahead of me with good delegation, communication and service amid the busy-ness. Special shout out to a chinese lady Pin-Ju for her professional manner reassuring the entire queue of customers one on one that she will find a table for us while we wait.

Certainly one of my highlights on my 3 day Melbourne visit. I will certainly be back should I be around Chadstone in the future.

*I would highly recommend the clams if anyone is into seafood.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at New Shanghai Restaurant, and overall, it was a delightful experience.

Ambiance: The restaurant has a cozy and welcoming atmosphere with a modern yet traditional Chinese decor. The lighting is soft, and the seating is comfortable, making it a great place for both casual dinners and special occasions.

Service: The staff were friendly and attentive, ensuring that our dining experience was smooth from start to finish. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and made excellent recommendations. The food arrived promptly, and any requests were handled efficiently.

Food: The highlight of the evening was, of course, the food. The menu offers a wide range of authentic Shanghai dishes, with something for everyone. I particularly enjoyed [mention any specific dish, e.g., “the xiao long bao (soup dumplings), which were perfectly steamed and bursting with flavor”]. The ingredients were fresh, and the dishes were well-prepared with a good balance of flavors.

Price: Considering the quality and quantity of the food, the prices were reasonable. It’s great value for the experience provided.

Overall Experience: New Shanghai Restaurant offers a fantastic dining experience with great food, attentive service, and a pleasant ambiance. Whether you’re a fan of Shanghai cuisine or just looking to try something new, I would definitely recommend giving this...
