Tao Dumplings Brighton — Restaurant in Melbourne

When we read bad reviews I really believe we should pay attention not to ignore. Specifically if you were customer of places many years and you believe you are getting ripped off. It was most disappointing and absolutely rip off experience , I have been customer of this place for many years. I don’t know if the new owners or change the chef? I recommend this place to many of my friends and family members as well as many of my clients who they also come to this restaurant . I would never ever return their restaurant, or pick up take away, almost 1 takeaway container meal cost $30 and it was barely containers was filled. I have had take away and portion always the same and food was delicious, tonight we had take away meal cost almost weekly a family supermarket and containers were half full, I’m honestly telling this 25 minutes drive to the restaurant and came home so small portions. We had lemon chicken and beef black beans, they filled so much broccoli and maybe most one full spoon of beef and lemon chicken was total of 9 small cut chicken pieces half the container. Price is definitely gone up but they cut the portions down. Honestly it is clear why business goes downhill. When i call to give feedback they are offering me 15% discount next time I dine there. I can assure this restaurant lost many regular clients including me. Disappointing, chicken wasn’t even fresh cooked too much was hard or not fresh cooked chicken. Zero stars - only gave one star because I was forced to in order to post a review. For dining in anywhere in Melbourne, it was the worst experience in over 20 years. The floor was only half occupied by diners, there were at least 5 waiters, yet the service was abysmal. We arrived 1.5 hours before our film, but did not get our meal until 1 hour later - our order was "lost in the system", i.e. the scrappy piece of paper that our order was on got lost. This was probably due to the fact that take away orders appear to get priority over customers dining in. We had to demand that the staff pull their finger out so that our meal arrived with 30 mins before we had to leave. Unfortunately, their EFTPOS machine also failed on the evening. Didn't add to the joy but not their fault. The dining area is noisy as hell. Could not fault the food when it did arrive, very nice. Will never go...

It’s a difficult restaurant to review. The food was great, really generous serving of vinegar and chilli oil, the dumplings were fresh and perfectly cooked and the fried rice was delicious. The service though, so so bad! My husband had to convince the server to write down our take away order and they still got it wrong. Order taken and paid for, husband exits the restaurant per covid protocols, comes back in to collect the order and staff demand order number, when my husband explains he wasn’t given one, he is then rudely asked to confirm exactly what he ordered and even then it was demanded that he return the eftpos receipt as proof?! He was treated so poorly that we’ve decided it doesn’t matter how good the food is we’ll never go back and instead support other local businesses that treat their customers with the respect...
