Hailing from Hong Kong there was some serious hype when it established in Sydney and Melbourne many years ago. At a slight $ premium to the other nearby Asian restaurants serving similar fare but the quality and experience you get definitely justifies the price (plus the Michelin star). Yum cha style food made fresh to order, we ticked the boxes on the sheet with our choices and the bill is then placed on your table and the dishes crossed off as they are brought out. We decided to go for the two specials which were bang bang chicken and sweet and sour chicken. The sweet and sour chicken came with a real hit of nostalgia for me as it strongly echoed the flavours of the sweet and sour chicken dish I ate post hours of roaming around the Great Wall of China. I also decided to take the opportunity to sample a few things I hadn’t tried before and this was a very successful experiment. The steamed egg cake was almost my dish of the day. I loved the exceptional lightness to it and the delicious sweetness. Will definitely look out for that one on menus in future. The charcoal lava bombs were my second delightful surprise. This was a very interesting dish. I wasn’t sure what to expect but the sweet egg like filling was super yummy. The dim sum itself was also very enjoyable. For me there’s nothing like a traditional prawn dumpling so there I was inhaling these while my dining companion favoured the beancurd skin roll with shrimp and the spinach shrimp dumpling. The wasabi salad prawn dumpling was also a winner with its crispy texture. Spring rolls and vermicelli rolls were found to be quite tasty also. I appreciated the little buzzer on the table for service which was convenient when we wanted to call for our egg tart dessert. These were just perfect and made very authentically. A lovely end to a...

Read moreWhen Tim Ho Wan opened in Melbourne in November 2015, the queue was out the door. I wondered what all the fuss was about. And when my friend said she wanted to try out some of the other items on the menu, I decided to join in. And here’s what the rave is all about.
Located on Bourke Street, the restaurant has 2 doors – one to dine in and the other for takeaway. And only if you have had the pleasure of eating in this amazing restaurant, experiencing all that it has to offer, that you should even consider the takeaway option. You want to dine in and I have found that if you come around 1pm or just a little bit after, you are guaranteed a shorter wait and a better chance for a seat.
We started off with the Baked Bun with BBQ Pork. This is part of their Big 4 Heavenly Kings. The Bun was fluffy and light. The BBQ pork, tender, juicy and simmering in the delectable sauce. Did we start off too big? I think we did. But heck – YOLO!
Being adventurous, we chose the Fish Maw with Prawn Paste. Neither of us knew what Fish Maw was, but that wasn’t going to stop us from trying it. I found it a little funky. I honestly don’t know how to describe it any other way. And not funky in a bad way either. Just different. And different enough for me to enjoy it but those Buns were just too damn good.
The final item was the Wasabi Salad Prawn Dumplings. My Gosh! DE.LI.CIOUS. If you enjoy your spice with your seafood then get this. Just get it and enjoy the awesomeness.
Would I recommend Tim Ho Wan? Absolutely. It’s a dine-in experience that you need to enjoy yourself. I believe the hype – and they deserve their...
