Visited multiple times. I love this restaurant so much🥰 My favorite menu is marinated fried tofu (a.k.a inari) udon.
Don’t doubt food quality due to the price. If you like ordinary Japanese udon, you may like their food. Udon noodle is .. (oh my..how can I describe in English?).. like springy and chewy?. Not soft like instant udon noodle. They make udon noodle in the shop. If they sell it, I really want to buy a box. Tempura is also amazing. Cream croquet is highly recommended. Rice (or don / donburi) is not the best like other menu. Steamed rice was bit too sticky to me.
Serving system: check menu at the entrance, and tell the menu number to staff from the first counter. You can pick up your menu from the second counter almost straight away. If you want to get some extra (e.g. seaweed, inari, inari sushi, kimchi, onsen tamago, mayo etc.), pick it up and put on your tray. And they also sell several tempura menu (prawn, chicken katsu, chicken karaage, croquets, crab stick, vegies etc.). It is also self serve. When you put everything what you want to eat in your tray, then go to the end of the counter and pay. Before taking a seat, you may add some kick via complimentary condiment station including grated radish, grated ginger, spring onion, and tempura crumbs. Add some spring onion and crumbs into your warm udon soup. Radish and ginger are good friends for tempura and cold udon soup. Utensils is placed next of the fridge. When you finish your meal, you should bring the tray back to the shelf which is located next of the counter.
It’s not a good place if you want to spend time like cafe or other fancier restaurant. It’s an ‘eat and go’ restaurant. Don’t have reservation seat. Ah! They serve enough amount of food. Don’t try extra noodle/rice at the first visit unless you are a...
Read moreWorst experience, terrible service. This place used to be my favourite place when I was a student, so I brought my friend to introduce udon but it was the worst experience I had in Melbourne. I ordered seaweed udon and 4 side dishes but because of the seaweed it absorbed all the broth(soup) so I went to get some more and the staff poured a bit but after few minutes the seaweed absorbed everything again so I went to get some more but the staff told me to wait and served more than 8 new customers who came after me. But more than that, they made me wait for more than 10-15 minutes when they were chatting and laughing in Japanese. And after the long wait, they told me that they can’t give me extra soup because I am sharing the food. My friend tried the soup but she didn’t like it because it was so plain and bland so she wasn’t eating. But no one told us that we can not share food or if we share food they won’t give us extra soup. They should’ve said that when we ordered the food. They even gave us extra bowl when we asked for it. And why can’t they just tell me when I asked for the soup? Why did they make me wait in front of them for 15 minutes while my food got cold and the seaweed absorbed all the soup? So I couldn’t finish my food because the udon got cold, seaweed absorbed all the soup when I had more than half of them left. I told them “you didn’t say we are not allowed to share food” and the staff said and blamed the other staff saying “she doesn’t know the rule”. Absolutely terrible service. Worst customer service. I will never go back again. Waste...
Read moreLunch @Udon.Yasan, a very simple no frills udon eatery with cheap dishes. Go to the counter and specify the number of the menu item (eg #2 - for sukiyaki beef udon noodle soup), spicify the type of udon, grab a tray and move to the next window, get your meal, slide across to the next display window for optional sides (tempura prawn and katsu chicken please) and finally slide along to the register to pay.
Then you can help yourself to spring onions, tempura crumbs for crunch and sauces, cutlery, before taking a seat. As there's no table service, return your tray and dishes to the right of the cash register before leaving.
The broth is quite nice with good flavour, plenty of ultra slivered beef strips, though it's quite sweet as if you're eating lots of caramelised onions. This detracts from the overall broth and flavour. The thick udon noodles have a nice chew and are tasty. Its a hearty bowl to get through. The sides are nice but not that warm. I guess it's a lucky mix as to how long they've been sitting there before you take them. The katsu chicken is yum though, tender chicken, crunchy crumb, and nice with some sauce. The tempura prawn is yum too, lovely crunchy batter encasing tender prawn. For the price it's pretty decent fare for what you get.
