Where do I start? You hear it so often "If I could give a 0, I would." Consider my verdict a "0" On the 13th April 2025, a table for 2 was booked to celebrate a special birthday. We arrived and we were shown our table. So Far, all good. We were told it would be table service. We ordered drinks which were promptly delivered to our table. This is where the service deteriorated rapidly. We then ordered the sourdough and our main meal. What I saw next was disgusting! In my line of vision, I witnessed the 2 staff handling the sourdough without gloves or tongs...unbelievable! This is after clearing tables etc without gloves. Do these people have qualifications in food handling. I certainly hope this is followed up by the authorities. More and more people were arriving whereby the attention given to our table became less and less. When our meals finally arrived, I found my chicken parmigiana to be saturated in salt. The staff by this time were running around like headless chooks. Waitress cleared our glasses and in a rush doing so, toppled a glass of water on our table. Did she get a cloth and clean it up...no! She came back with a serviette and dropped it on the spill; then left. Finally, we ordered sweets. We waited and waited and waited..... We gave up as these did not arrive. Infuriated, we got up to pay the bill as the night was now ruined. Needless to say the sweets were on the tab which we asked to be removed. Waitress couldn't have cared less; she did so with an insincere "sorry." This is a perfect example of a business being understaffed (2 staff on the floor and a 3rd was looking after the drinks). This hotel is packing the customers in knowing full well that they are incapable of looking after everybody; therefore the service becomes non existent. Finally, we were sitting behind the booking counter where the dividing wall was covered in dust. Don't they have cleaners? I would never recommend this Hotel to anyone and I will never return. Prices for wine are exorbitant and as I said earlier, their food handling practices need to be addressed before there is a salmonella out break. It's all about the $$$$$$ There is another hotel in Beechworth which is excellent! I suggest to any one reading...

This place is pretty atrocious to be honest. Vibe was good but don’t expect the kitchen to be able to produce any food quickly. We placed our order when the kitchen opened at 6 and their cook was having a great time chatting to some band members playing that night. We ordered at 6 and told that the kitchen was now not opening until 6.15 (as obviously the cook was still chatting and hadn’t even attempted to do his job). We waited. And waited. The dining room was filling up and the diligent waitress (who was lovely and probably just as worried as we were) continued to take orders. At 6.43 the cook sent some chips to a table who ordered just before us to placate them. This was the sole production of this kitchen for 45 minutes. Two bowls of chips (I guess the fryer was off). The mood of the dining room was starting to turn. We were offered some chips by the lovely people at the next table who had the only coveted food in the now full dining room. Finally at 6.55 some food arrived. It was actually inedible. My fears about the fryer were true. Wasn’t turned on till too late and kids fish and chips were so oily as to be inedible. Worst still the leek and blue cheese gnocchi was an abomination which strangely came from the oven and was a burnt on the top, gluggy, gluey, and horrible. After a few mouthfuls it was time to go. Regrettably I paid for half of the meal that shouldn’t be served in the first place. My suggestion is to try the Chinese restaurant round the corner. Country fried rice and prawn crackers never tasted so good. The cook should retire or try another industry. Move on buddy. I just hope the cook isn’t also the owner as...

We had a very disappointing experience trying to eat lunch here. After waiting more than 50 mins for our meals (with a young child in tow), someone came and told us that our "docket was misplaced". The establishment was not very busy and it was hard to understand how the waitstaff and kitchen had failed to communicate about our order.... they offered us nothing but additional waiting time for our meals! 😐 We said okay, we would continue to wait, but that we would like a discount off the bill. The person who had spoken to us went to ask the owner about this and returned to let us know that the answer to this request was "no". I was quite disgusted that we were offered absolutely nothing, not even a free drink or some bread, when we had waited all that time, with a small child, and they had completely stuffed up the order. I would also like to add that I ordered a glass of sav blanc, and when my partner went to get me a second glass (because the wait staff failed to offer) he was told "we don't have sav blanc by the glass". Huh???? This is a pub we're talking about... and it turned out they had given me some other kind of wine, but didn't mention to me that it wasn't sav blanc. I thought this was really deceptive of them! We left in disgust, without eating. I couldn't believe they wouldn't even take $5 off the bill after the experience we had. We are Beechworth locals and to be treated so badly by a business that we would have happily supported has left a bad taste. Try the Ox and Hound or the Brewery either side of this badly run operation. Better food and better...

Can only comment on the food. We went on a cold June Sunday night, and we arrived at around 530. The restaurant doesn't start serving till 6. We were told they were fully booked but The sweet young waitress arranged a table for 2 right near the raging open fire place. We grabbed some wine from the bar and patiently waited for 6 and were among the first to get our order in. Our food was on the table at 630, by this time the place was packed. Our food was delicious, venison schnitzel and bangers and mash with caramelised onion, both were absolutely delicious. Topped off with a creme brulee and apple crumble. All definitely a notch above your average pub fare. We were finished our meal by 730 but noticed some patrons still waiting for their meals. So try to get in early unless you're prepared to wait.

We stayed in Beechworth for 4 nights recently and ended up eating here nearly every night! It may be a pub, however the new head chef from Lume in Melbourne has completely revamped the menu. As a result, you really feel like you are in an upscale restaurant with quality food at reasonable pub prices. The menu has the usual pub classics, but there are also more complex meals, some of which include game meat which we found interesting and quite exotic. The presentation of the meals was exceptional, which was pleasenty surpsing. Further, each night we were there the new head chef 'Eli' came and chatted with us, explaining the ingredients of our meals and having a personable chat. We really enjoyed it and recommend a visit from anyone visiting Beechworth. Thanks Eli, from Stewart and Shye.

Rating for the dining, not the accommodation. I'd rate the food and service 4 stars, but giving 5 stars overall because they were one of the only places we could find open on Boxing Day when we arrived, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Although the place was flat out, we did manage to get one of the few unreserved tables, and had a really nice burger and a decent Parma. The shoestring fries went well with the burger, but would prefer something chunky with the Parma. Confusing/disappointing menu that says the Parma comes with salad, but apparently it's a $3 extra which we found out about only after enquiring about what we thought was the missing salad and having it brought over. Not a real problem in the end, but could be clearer to avoid disappointment
