Read moreYeah, this is a good choice. We were staying nearby and this place popped up in our search. A little on the pricey side, but it didn’t disappoint. It’s nice to be able to sit on the tables outside and watch the world go by. It wasn’t too busy on a Monday at 10:45 ish.
The coffee is mild and creamy, but still flavourful, just as I like it. The porchetta sandwich on focaccia bread is delicious. The little pinch of salt and thime on top of the macadamia croissant was perfect and the vanilla and rhubarb flan is one of my favourite things I’ve tried in a while – smooth, creamy custard and not too sweet with the punch of rhubarb at the bottom, all wrapped up in nice slightly crispy pastry crust.
The dulce de leche bombolini is good too with a rich, dense filling, almost like a fluffy cheesecake inside. I’m just not sure the thime works as well on this as it does on the croissant though. It was also like it was split in half all cream on one side, all dulce de leche on the other side. I’m not sure if that’s intentional or not, but it made it a bit less enjoyable to eat compared to if the filling was evenly distributed. Maybe I just got unlucky with the one I got.
I’m still undecided about the whole twice-baked croissant thing. The different texture is interesting, as they do get nice and crispy, I’m just not sure if I prefer the drier texture over a more moist, buttery croissant. They do hold up well with the fillings though, they don’t get soggy, which is obviously a good thing.
I would definitely go back to try some more things like the hash brown or the basque cheesecake with pickled tomatoes… I’m getting hungry again just...
Read moreIt was a grey and drizzly day and all the outdoor seating was wet so I wasn't able to dig in until I was in the shelter of Martin Place metro, but the Porchetta in focaccia was very hearty lunch that I happily shared with hubby. I don't mind mustard but this mustard sauce was swamping the flavour of the pork. I appreciated the shards of crispy skin included... perfectly crisp with a delicious layer of melted fat underneath. Since we're not often in the city, I took the opportunity to also try the brisket pie, which had the highest, many-layered, flaky pastry lid on it. The beef was chunky and flavoursome and suitably saucy and tender. Two of us only managed half. I wasn't going to eat the lemon meringue tart till I got home but took a stealthy bite for the sake of this review. Not a fan of the little meringue "beret" it wore...though torched for colour, it was too soft for my liking. But the crust was thin and crispy and the curd inside a perfect balance of sweetness and tang. Those three items set me back $43, so not a cheap takeaway by any stretch. Would I go again? I would. But hold...
