A great night at this vegan eatery in Newtown
C. M.C. M.
I have been trying new plant based cuisine and Mexican hasn't been that much of a positive experience especially I got introduced to the bland version at traditional Mexican restaurants. I never thought people can make it tasty. I went to Bad hombres last weekend and it was disappointing too. Just not on par when the flavoursome vegan food I can make at home and it really lacks the umami I was craving. Then when I got stuck heading to another popular vegan venue in Newtown, I found this place that I meant to go. The place was filled with large groups as if there was some events there, then I found out they have ALL YOU CAN EAT Tacos on Tuesdays and Wednesday. Boy, was it popular and happening! I'm a petite girl so All you can eat is just asking for indigestion and sleepless nights, but judging the price of $15 for 2 tacos, I can see why it would seems cheap for those who can down 10 plus tacos. I do think it is quite expensive especially they didn't taste that amazing. I asked for the best popular options and I was not disappointed. The eggplant tacos was hands down HEAVENLY. Yes I did pay regular price for that but it was worth it. I can cook so I know good food when I taste one. The quesadillas was alright, the cheese at bad hombres was far better. Though it didn't have all those dipping sauce, pineapples to go with it. And there are 4 pieces here! There is cheese mushrooms and beans in the quesadillas. Being all vegan and all gluten free is just perfect for me. I have to say Tacos at Calle Rey is gonna be my new vegan fast food craving spots. If only I can make this at home, I gotta come back and try more of them to 'study' it more, so many more to try. Friendly staff, nice vibe, less busier than the other end of vegan mile that's always in traffic jam at night. Latest menu with updated price as of March 2022

Cool hip vegan Mexican place and you might not even realize it! My take - good but likely I won’t be back. Very busy place so definitely make use of the reservations option in google app. The wall drawings are quite fun! The set menu for $28 is a great deal for people who don’t want to pick. Our companions wanted ala carte so we picked a few dishes. My favorite was the Mexican Arancini - nice crunch with good sauce but a little crumbly that fell apart. The guacamole was really strange for me. More liquid than what I expect and looks like just a pesto sauce instead of chunky guacamole. Definitely didn’t enjoy Buffalo cauliflower but I never like Buffalo sauce to start. The tacos were very generous and took a long time before it arrives. We tried three flavors - smoked chicken, carnitas and eggplant. Tacos come in pairs so better to share. The best was eggplant, nicely fried. The smoked chicken and carnitas were both made from jackfruit. It had shredded pieces which were quite convincing. The chunky pieces were quite obviously fruit. We also got smoked chicken nachos, quite similar as the tacos. Drinks were alright - I had pisco punch, white sangria and my hubby had pisco sour. The pisco sour was good. Many people got the lageritas for show but didn’t look so appealing to me. We ended the night with churros - great size and crunch. Not a fan of the coconut flakes and the dark chocolate syrup. Also no split cheques allowed. Overall fun place - good for both meat eaters and vegans to be at but I have another place in mind for this too ;)

My recent dining experience at Calle Ray in Sydney left me utterly delighted and impressed. From start to finish, every aspect of the meal showcased the restaurant's commitment to exceptional food, ambiance, and service.

Walking into Calle Ray, I was immediately struck by the warm and inviting atmosphere. The tasteful decor and cozy lighting created a perfect setting for a memorable dining experience. The staff greeted me with genuine smiles, and their knowledge about the menu was evident as they guided me through the options.

The menu at Calle Ray is a testament to creativity and passion. With a focus on modern Australian cuisine with Spanish and Mediterranean influences, each dish is a work of art. The fusion of flavors and high-quality ingredients was evident in every bite. The attention to detail was remarkable, and even the simplest ingredients were elevated to new heights.

I had the pleasure of trying several dishes, and each one was a revelation. From the delicate seafood ceviche bursting with fresh flavors to the perfectly grilled steak with a delectable sauce, every dish showcased the chef's culinary expertise. The presentation was as delightful to the eyes as the flavors were to the palate.

The wine list at Calle Ray was equally impressive, offering a thoughtful selection that complemented the menu beautifully. The staff's recommendations were spot-on, and they were attentive without being intrusive, adding to the overall enjoyment of the meal.

The dessert was the grand finale of a fantastic dining experience. The creative desserts were a playful blend of textures and flavors, leaving me with a sweet memory that lingers even after leaving the restaurant.

What truly sets Calle Ray apart is the passion that the team brings to every aspect of the dining experience. It's evident that the chef and staff are dedicated to providing guests with an unforgettable culinary journey. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply looking for a remarkable meal, Calle Ray is a must-visit destination in Sydney's vibrant food scene. My visit to this restaurant was nothing short of exceptional, and I can't wait to return to explore more of their...
