We had dinner here last night since our usual place and their direct competitor next door (Grapevine Beijing Cuisine) was closed on Monday evening. So, we thought to give this new place a try to check whether this Chatswood outpost is better compared to their old places in Sydney Chinatown.
The dishes have more variety compared to the Chinatown places and the decor / ambience are also better compared to the basic small spaces they have in their original sites. The price / value proposition are the same and represents quite good value for your money. However, in my opinion the hand-made noodles and pan-fried dumplings at Grapevine (competitor next door in the same block) are much better than the ones at this place, but the menu in this place is more extensive and you can try more dish variety.
The only let-down is their dish preparation / management style is still bad like their Chinatown sites. We ordered three dishes and would expect to consume them at around the same time since they're complementary and supposed to be consumed together. However, the dishes came with some time-gap, especially the third one which arrived only after we complained that we've finished the other two dishes and we wanted to cancel the order. Though the dishes were not bad and good value for money, all in all the evening was not a good dining experience.
Further visits reveal that this place has started to serve morning breakfast service with Northern China staples like noodles, pancakes, dumplings and buns. They're served from 7am to 10.30am and are popular with locals since they're very good value for your money. The only downside is the staff members don't speak English at all so can't answer your question. Luckily they have paper menu order that has English description of the dishes so you get some understanding when ordering them....
Read moreHow Can It Go So Wrong!! Seriously Disappointing, my favourite dumpling place is ruined.... Formally New Shanghai in Lemon Grove, now under new ownership. This place has been my go to for a dumpling fix for years! Around Christmas time however the place was taken over by a lovely couple who i believe run or used to run Chinatown noodle house. I really wanted it to work for them as they are lovely people but unfortunately this place is just horrible now. I gave them 3 opportunities to redeem themselves but tonight the food was almost inedible. The sweet & sour pork ribs literally were spat out and sent straight to the bin, it was some of the most vile meat i've eaten in my life. The salt & pepper squid which was the best i've ever had under New Shanghai ownership has dropped very close to the worst i've ever had tonight. The braised eggplant was nice but I wouldn't say it's the best value for the serving size. Soup dumplings were still nice thankfully but unfortunately after 3 terrible experiences I just can't go back. It will have to stay as a memory of...
Read moreDumplings and the fried rice were quite good. We ordered pork ribs, but what came out was more like braised beef. We asked about it, and she assured us it was what we ordered, pork. We looked at the menu again. It was a picture of pork ribs that looked like they were fried and then coated with a thicker red sauce. Ours looked like beef braised in a watery soy-based sauce. When asked, she said it was what we ordered and that the pictures were pictures and that we shouldn’t expect our food to look like what was on the menu. The taste wasn’t bad, but it was beef. She argues it is pork but if it looks like beef, smells like beef, tastes like beef, and had the consistency of beef, I’m inclined to say it’s beef.
One of the plates we were given was also dirty. A new one was given right away but with no apology. Had to ask for water. Dumplings came out as we were finishing up our meal. Food again was quite good but an overall...
