We recently dined at Double Cross Dining Room as a group of seven and, due to First Table's booking limitation of four people per reservation, we made two separate bookings. We understood the policy and were happy to keep orders and billing separate. However, upon arrival at 7:30pm, we were surprised and disappointed to find that we were seated at two tables quite far apart—even though the restaurant was only about one-third full and had two large empty tables available.
We politely asked whether we could be seated at adjacent tables or at one of the large tables so we could simply sit together. The response from the waiter was dismissive and abrupt. He said no, citing First Table rules, and explained that if they allowed groups to sit together, others wouldn't book normally. While I can appreciate the need to protect the business model, it felt unnecessarily rigid—especially given that the larger table wasn’t booked at the time.
As a result, our dinner felt awkward and fragmented, with a table of unrelated and loud diners sitting between our two groups, while much of the restaurant remained empty. It was an unfortunate situation that overshadowed what could have been a lovely evening.
I’ve read many positive reviews about this venue’s food and ambience, and I believe our experience might have been an exception. Still, I’d like to suggest that the management consider a more flexible and customer-focused approach in such cases. Accommodating a basic seating request—especially when it clearly wouldn't affect other diners or revenue—can go a long way in creating a welcoming and...
Read moreDouble Cross Espresso in the heart of Crows Nest is a café serving up great coffee and top notch brunch choices. The sell 63 degree eggs, sandwiches, bircher, muesli, burgers and more. On this occasion, a group of us tried a range of the meals including the Avocado Haloumi which was 63 degree eggs sitting atop sourdough toast, smashed avocado, tomato and haloumi. We also tried the salad: roots and greens. It was a bowl of greens with candied sweet potato, lotus root, broad beans, ricotta and house dressing – a lovely combination of flavours and beautifully presented. The chia bowl was also colourful and filling – it had coconut, chia and fruits. The group also tried some lunch items like the famed Mentaiko pasta. This pasta, combined with spicy fish roe, a 63 degree egg, chives and crème fraiche is certainly a popular and interesting dish at this café. A couple of burgers rounded off the meal: the chicken karage and a beef rib burger too, accompanied by some nicely fried chips. The coffee here is also great; I had a cold brew and the others had lattes and smoothies. If you’re after some new menu choices, combined with a Japanese influence – be sure to check this out....
Read moreDinned here for brunch on a Saturday.
It was very busy however the staff seemed to have it under control and friendly & helpful. Recommend booking a table.
Both my partner and I had the Sausage and egg roll and shared some side. We ordered the sides because we both thought the roll would be small however it was way larger than expected.
It had scrambled eggs with a sausage and fennel patty with cheese, hashbrown and HP sauce on a potato bun. The roll was very nice. The only downside which is just a personal preference, was that the fennel content had a strong presence which is something I am not familiar with during brunch and the other is the sauce was a bit light and could of had more.
The potato bun was perfect as well as the hashbrowns.
Would I come here again? Definitely
Edit: Returned again after 3 months. This time I tried the Prawn with Dill on toast. This dish was very refreshing and surprisingly filling. I couldn't fault it.
Edit: returned again 6 months later. My wife ordered the fried chicken Benedict. Absolutely fantastic. Chicken was juicy and the sauce was light. I ordered french toast. It was fluffy with a generous serving...
