I organised a dinner for the family for my wife's birthday. Booked for 2 adults and 2 kids (7 and 5 years) on a Sunday afternoon at 6pm.
Getting to the restaurant was easy enough, there are limited parking options on the surrounding streets as they are all 1 or 2 hour metered spots so not enough time for dinner and a stroll. So we decided to part in a Secure Parking facility on Pirrama Rd within 5 walk of the restaurant. As we entered after 5pm it was only $20 flat rate.
We arrived about 10 minutes before our booking time so we wandered around Jones Bay Wharf until they were ready for us. A lovely view of the Sydney CBD, Harbour Bridge and surrounds.
Once our table was ready we were taken to the upstairs dining area which suited us as it was more quiet than the ground floor.
Our waiter was friendly enough and took our order. We ordered the Octopus, Jamon and Oysters for entree which were all fantastic in terms of taste and portion size for an entree. My eldest loves Prosciutto so loved the Jamon. For mains, my wife ordered the Barramundi fillets, for the kids we ordered fish and chips and steak and chips (a bit more upmarket that the ones you get at the local). I love a good steak and have tried different Wagyu from lots of different places/countries around the world. I know it was a 1.3kg rib eye but it could have shared it with my wife and kids. When the food came, it all was as expected except for my steak. It didn't look like a 1.3kg rib eye, so i queried the waiter and he confirmed it was in fact the Sirloin, he said the rib eye was 1.3kgs and for 2 people, which he didn't stop me when i placed the order. I decided to keep the Sirloin rather than send it back and while it was OK, probably tasted a little worse due to the bad taste in my mouth from not getting what i ordered. My wife's and kids meals were all fine, but probably not commensurate of the price and expectation of the fine dining experience.
We realised that our waiter was serving 7 tables which is why he was quite stretched and attention to detail was not there. The waiter taking care of the section next to us appeared to only have 5 tables and seemed to provide much better service, even having time to have a chat with the patrons.
We also found the server who brought out the food quite lacking in personality too. Our daughters had some toys on the table which stopped him from placing down the food and he abruptly requested she clear the table of the toys so he could put the food on the table. We've had more friendly staff at our local restaurant and would have expected service to be a bit friendlier at an establishment like this.
So overall we had a good night but was a bit disappointed with the service which we took off 1 star for. Also took off one star for the quality of food not being up to par with the prices charged. I am not saying it is expensive for a find dining restaurant, just saying that the quality is not at a level which the price would lead...

Read moreWe have dined at Flying Fish for many years. We recently had dinners booked 2 weekends in a row. One was a Christmas dinner and the other for my parents 60th Wedding anniversary.
When we arrived for our Christmas dinner for a group of 6 we noticed that the staff had changed and so had the menu. We were approached by a waiter who was taking our drinks order. I asked for a glass of Moscato and I was abruptly told that they only serve it by the bottle. I explained that I've always been able to order a glass. He just repeated himself and I just ordered a bottle. The service was slow and the waitress tried her best but didn't seem comfortable.
It came to desert time. There were only 3 deserts available and none were appealing so we asked if we could have affogato's with no alcohol. The waitress took our order and then came back and advised that they were unable to do affogato's as they had no ice cream. We asked if the other desserts on the menu were served with ice cream and she said yes but that ice cream is only reserved for the desserts. Needless to say we went elsewhere for dessert and they valued our business.
The following week there were 13 of us for my mum and dads 60th wedding anniversary. We thought the service couldn't get any worse but it did.
We bought a cake with us and advised them that we wouldn't be having desert as we have the cake. I gave the candles to the waitress who proceeded to put them on a shelf at the drinks station. I got up and asked her to please put them with the cake. She looked flustered.
She took our order and we had 2 children with us who ordered a child's pasta and a child's steak. The children's meals came out with our entrees except they bought out 2 pastas instead. She said she will check with the kitchen. It took until our mains were served to get the steak dish. She admitted at the end of the night that she forgot to put that order in.
My father asked for salt and pepper, we had to ask 3 times as she kept forgetting. She kept saying sorry I forgot.
Once our mains were cleared, she asked if we would like dessert, then continued to say oh you have a cake. I got up and took her aside and said that the cake was a surprise for my parents and she now ruined it. She apologised and then asked me if we wanted individual plates for the cake? I don't know how she thought we were going to eat the cake. She then came back to ask me where she should put the candles on the cake? I was stunned by the question and asked her to surprise me!
By this stage we were all over it and just wanted to leave.
We spent a lot of money here and the customer services on both occasions was terrible.
Bring back Rocco and Stefano they had great...
