I tried both dine in and take away from ginger at different occasions and below is what I think.
Dine in experience - the restaurant has a homely touch to it - as someone else already noted in his review, it’s a house that modified into a restaurant and it certainly shows, in the sense that, there are different rooms in the house where you eat :) I remember telling my mates that I’m sitting in the lounge room of the restaurant.
Food wise - it was really good. The food was rich and it was cooked & served well. Although I prefer to have my curries spicy, I had to opt in for a mild spicy options to go with the dinner guests and it was very good. I enjoyed the curry with roti and some entrees. We ordered the yellow dhal, lamb curry, paneer masala and a range of entrees. Loved all the vegetarian items. My mates loved their meat items as well.
My personal favourite was the vegetable biriyani - being a vegetarian from India, I miss my biriyanis and when I feel like, I choose to order biriyani from a handful of restaurants and Ginger is certainly in that list.
Take out experience - I was enjoying an evening to myself and had ordered some food and beverages from Ginger. The hostess was very helpful when taking my order over the phone. When requested, she was suggesting what dishes would go with the beverages I had in mind and even offered a delivery discount as the order was over a certain amount. However I chose to pick up the food by myself as I lived 3 mins away from the restaurant.
I was asked to pick up after 20 mins and the food was ready, hot and prompt when I arrived to pick up. The evening went well and I’d order again from Ginger when the need arises.
What can they improve - why I gave them a 4 ?
I personally think that they can ;
Improve the interiors of their restaurant - although it gives a home feel, sometimes you’d want something more elegant, more spacious (as Neil noted) and more private set up (think of dim lit setup with matching dark seats and mild music, something to set the mood). I know of an Indian restaurant that has amazing interiors in Melbourne. I’m not sure if it would be appropriate to quote a restaurant as an example when writing review for another restaurant. So if the staff from Ginger are reading this and would like to know more, I’m happy to provide the information if they can contact me in private.
Portion size - this is with the biryani’s - personally, I’d have loved more biriyani. The biriyani is done very well, but lacks the size ... my mates who ordered meat biryani’s also voiced the same. They’d have loved to have some...

Read moreI booked this place for my mum's birthday off the back of great reviews. Unfortunately our experience was not positive one. Firstly the ambience of the interior was average and it not well lit or decorated to create a welcoming atmosphere. We were seated the very back of the restaurant which looked like a garage space in disguise. The staff member who was attending to our table was not very considerate and lacked good service. She didn't let everyone finish the entrees before taking the plates away for the main course. Then she mixed up our order of daal makhani with another table that ordered the same dish extra extra hot. All our mouths were burning and my cousin got sick from just eating one spoon of it. It took her a while to figure out it was her mistake. To make matters even worse after the mains were finished they brought out the cake (that I had at the start requested them to remove from the package and place and light the candles before bringing it out). She placed the cake on the table still semi packaged with the unlit candles next to it and then rudely asked me to remove the package and light the candles myself. I COULD NOT BELIEVE MY EYES AND EARS like was she for real??! That was literally the "icing on the cake" of what turned out to be a disappointing evening. It was meant to be celebration but it turned sour. The food overall was not what it's hyped up to be AT ALL. Everyone talking about traditional Indian food etc., will be disappointed. The chicken tikka masala for example tasted like they had put 10 teaspoons of sugar through the dish and some of the vegetarian dishes were just plain bland. That probably explained why there were not that many Indians dining at the restaurant on a busy Saturday night. I definitely would NOT recommend this place for the horrible service alone and you can get better food in so many other places. Big mistake...
