I've been coming to Kiroran for years. Every time I come to Sydney, I make it a point to come at least once every trip. And if I'm honest, more.

This last trip, I was here for just 3 days and I had dinner there twice.

If you don't know what to order, here's what I normally order.

TLDR Version

  1. Meat Pie
  2. Oven Baked Dumplings (Samsa)
  3. Stir Fried Flat Noodles
  4. Lamb and Potatoes
  5. Lamb Skewers
  6. Lamb Rib Skewers
  7. Cucumber Salad

Comprehensive Review.

I have to start with the Lamb and Potatoes because it was the dark horse of the whole menu.

This trip was the first time we ordered it and it was simply outstanding. The potatoes were seasoned nicely, seared perfectly on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The lamb was full of flavour. My only regret is I didn't try this sooner.

The meat pie 🥧, what can I say. I'm a sucker for pies, especially savoury ones. The crust was crispy and the filling juicy. As for the Samsa, for me, I feel the filling was just as juicy as the meat pie, but the pastry/skin was more delicate yet cooked to perfection finished in delightful brown.

As for the stir fried flat noodles, flat noodles is my preferred style of noodle, but if you prefer, you can always get the hand pulled noodles. The dish is laden with vegetables, I got the lamb version but if you don't like lamb(poor you) you can always get the chicken version.

On to the skewers. I absolutely love Uyghur grilled meat seasoning. What's the difference between the lamb skewers and the lamb rib skewers you might ask...

Lamb Skewers comprise of lamb cubes. Lamb Rob Skewers have about 5 Lamb Ribs on each skewer. If I had to choose, my preference would be the Lamb Rib Skewers. I mean, meat on the bone is just more flavourful. It's also got a nice layer of fat on top and we all know, Fat is Flavour.

Honourable Mention goes to the Da Pan Ji. It's a staple in Uyghur restaurants, but everything else shines through so much that we had to leave it off our order.

We didn't have desserts there, mainly because we had so much to eat, we didn't have space for dessert. Instead, what we did was take a walk to a nearby Thai Restaurant, Ed Ae Thai Restaurant, where we had Thai Tea Bingsu Saimai.

So bad, truly awful. I wouldn’t recommend this place to my worst enemy. I don’t know how they can call this place a restaurant? Ordered beef buns- came out and the meat inside was cold they obviously just microwave the food. Had to get table water myself. They refill the table water bottles from old 3L milk bottles which is strange. Ordered the big plate of chicken and noodle, had no flavour at all. We sent it back to the kitchen. My British mother cooks with more flavour and that is saying something… Lamb skewers came out and weren’t hot in the middle, maybe this is precooked and microwaved as well. Had to ask 2 times for wine glasses. Was only given 1 fork each, no chop sticks or spoons to serve the food with. Bread came out and was warm/cold maybe microwaved as well. Lamb and cumin dish was nothing special just stir fry lamb with lots of oil and cumin. Weird loud nightclub music playing. Lots of large tables available but they were turning away lots of customers which is a blessing for the customers I wish they turned me away. The service was awful just awful they really did not want to be there. They were very cold and dismissive and couldn’t care less about the customers. They don’t even try or care they just want your money. When I was seated the table was dirty and had not been wiped down. Some other dishes never came out and we said don’t bother. I couldn’t wait to leave- probably same feeling as the staff. This has to be the worst “restaurant” I have ever been to in my life. We ended up just getting the bill and leaving most of the food untouched because we didn’t want to get sick. Cash only sign so they can avoid paying tax. I think a sandwich from 7/11 would of been a more pleasant meal than the food at this...

Unhygienic food, rude staff and owner. I would never go again. I went with my family and ordered couple of dishes including Dapanji. I felt gross as i found a hair in the food. I called waitress to show her "black curly hair" in the food, she came and was very rude to me and said "SO WHAT". I again politely told her that there is a "HAIR" in the food, instead of apologizing and offering another plate, she told me that hair is not very long and it does happen. I was with my family and they were feeling uncomfortable too, so i just told her again that I will pay for the rest of the food but don't want to pay for that particular dish (Dapanji) and also we had very little from that plate.

She called the owner who also works as Chef in the restaurant, I thought that Owner would at least apologize but he did the exact opposite and told me that i have to pay and Hair is not a big issue. I again gently told him that i don't want to pay for that dish as i had only little bit of it and there is "Hair" in the food. He got very angry and threw all the food in a big plate on my table in front of me, causing few drops of oil falling on me and my wife's clothes. He and his staff were extremely rude, and treated us very bad. I would never go there again and also advise you guys to stay away from that filthy place.

I paid for the rest of the food but didn't pay for that dish (Dapanji) and left the restaurant as...

My friend and I went there for lunch. It was an experience for me as I never heard about this cuisine. I did some research got to read about their specialities and the restaurant reviews. The restaurant is located in the heart of city, just 5 minutes walk from Town hall. The ambience will give you a feel of an authentic set-up from their culture. It has a very basic look without anything fancy. We ordered the crispy fried potato and chicken along with the stir fried lamb. To my surprise the dishes were amazing. The flavours were subtle yet had the kick of spice which wasn't overpowering. The dishes were cooked to perfection and meat were really soft. The portion size were huge and each dish can serve 2 people. It looks like it is run by a family and everyone was super engaged. Greeting people and serving food with a minimal wait. They offer BYO which would be a great option as well. I would rate the 4 for food and 3.5 for atmosphere. But, it introduced to a new culture and culinary art so I would definitely try more dishes again.

Ok I do admit I don’t know anything about Uyghur food. But hear me out. I was taken there by an Uzbek. This is his food. And it’s freaking tasty. This is a big hint. At the back of the menu there are photos. Use this. It’s handy. As you can see what you get. I’ve posted the photos from the menu. Also as a another hint. It’s byo whatever you want. Table next to us. Bottle of Johnny walker. We had lots of beers. No charge. I’m Somewhat worried about posting this but if you are reading then you are probably not the usual customer. They don’t seem to mind. Service is not friendly but seemingly on point for the type of establishment. Some highlights. The Uyghur salad. Is definitely different. And do try the dapanji. Definitely unlike I’ve had before. Chicken. Noodles. Potato chili. Really quite good. The samsa according to my friend are close to as good as in Uzbekistan. And they are very tasty. And the highlight is the lamb kebab. Superb. I’ve posted photos of everything we tried. And the photo menus.
