Wild-eyed walking around Glebe looking for a meal. Hark! A ramen joint on a cold winter night, enough to tame the hunger, let the soup be the bigger sppooon, have the pork brush my hair gently whilst I drift off to sleep.
BOOM! Not this joint. Had the Goku ramen with tonkatsu broth, straigh thin noodles and a topping of corn.
Soup was not tonkatsu, probably Lee Kum Kee's pork bone broth stock as it was tasteless, quite salty with no hint of pork or umami whatsoever. It was topped with uncrushed sesame seeds, which doesnt make sense cos its not a burger bun. Do it right, crush it up.
Slices of pork was thinner than Coles select sandwich ham. As I scrunched my nose, the pork broke into smaller pieces. I thought it was magic.
Ramen was not acceptable as there was a section clumped up together. How does it happen? My guess is that a Japanese POW was made to make the ramen as punishment.
Corn presented in a bowl, dry, with A parsley leaf on top of it as a feeble attempt to mask the fact that it wasnt seasoned nor buttered. And why is it in a separate bowl?
I went home, unsatisfied, sad and wasnt able to find hot ramen love on a cold winters night. All I had was disappointment in a...
Read moreI love Ramen, and being so close to this shop which is near my university, it's a quick and easy place to get some ramen. The food is also amazing, 5 stars, though some are quite salty like the black garlic ramen. I mainly get the Goku Ramen with seaweed and corn on tonkotsu broth and it is a pretty light broth compared to other shops such as Gogyo. It's light, tangy, the pork is incredibly soft the egg is cooked and flavoured with a good tea taste and finally, the noodles are always chewy.
Now, if you plan on going, I recommend not to go during lunch because it starts to get crowded. Around 5:30 to 7:00 is a good time to get in if you don't want the hassle of having people right next to you slurping away. Going during lunch also makes the wait longer for your dish(s) but if there's no one, then you can be well assured it will come within a couple of minutes.
Overall, the staff is kind and can speak various languages such as Japanese, English and Cantonese (all I know from personal experience) as well, the toilets are clean, food is awesome, drinks are chilled, you don't have to give back the bowl and you can just leave it on the table and, they even say thank you to you...
Read moreOne of my many visits here. My favourite ramen spot in all of Sydney. I'm happy to see nothings really changed since lockdown. We've all had it tough, but now we're back. Time to relax, get back into routines
The ramen was mini goku ramen, and as usual I choose the miso base for good gut health and that comes with lots of umami. The taste is lovely. It's homemade, you can tell by the flavours that hit you. The subtleness, the depth. It's all there. Everything you'd want in a bowl of ramen.
If you're wanting a more flavour packed with your classic taste of chicken, I'd go with soy. But miso has a lovely broth of warm garlic that hits in the feels softly. I recommend trying both out during each visit.
Vegetable gyoza tastes just as you would expect from a gyoza. Good quality filling of peas, corn, carrot. A veggie delight that's fried to serve. The dipping sauce was tangy and well crafted for...
